Biography of Simon George Robert Monckton-Arundell, 9th Viscount Galway (1929-1971)

Simon George Robert Monckton-Arundell was the only son of George Vere Arundell Monckton-Arundell, 8th Viscount Galway, and succeeded his father in 1943. He was educated at Eton.

He was commissioned into the Life Guards in 1948 and retired as a Major in 1960. He was Deputy Lieutenant for Nottinghamshire in 1963.

Family

He married in 1953 Lady Teresa Jane Fox-Strangways (d 1989), only daughter of the 7th Earl of Ilchester, and had:

  • Charlotte Anne Monckton (1955-) Viscountess Galway m 2ndly in 1972 Richard Mark Walter Agnew

The title of Viscount Galway passed in 1971 to William Arundell Monckton-Arundell, 10th Viscount Galway (1894-1977), a descendent of the 5th Viscount Galway

  • Some papers relating to the period of the 9th Viscount's ownership of his estates are part of the Galway papers held in Manuscripts and Special Collections at the University of Nottingham, but are restricted. Prospective readers should contact the department for advice
