Course requirements

What references are required?
You will need to provide two references, one must be from your current supervisor. The other can be from a current or previous employer or an academic reference.

Can the 80 hours PCE-CfD client hours required be achieved in private practice?
Yes, you can count your private clients.

How do I qualify for the PCE-CfD Supervision course?
You need to have 20 hours of supervision sessions logged in order to qualify. We supply you with a supervisor for supervision. All delegates have access to up to eight sessions of your own supervision.

What do I need to deliver to obtain the supervision certification?
To qualify you have four chances to submit two adherent recordings with supervisees, so each recording ideally would be with a different supervisee. You are not expected to submit any 'client' recordings.

Supervision

Can I use my own supervisor as part of the course?

During the course, you will need to work with a University of Nottingham PCE-CfD supervisor. Your PCE-CfD supervision is additional to your clinical supervision or case management and is perhaps best thought of as part of the learning process of the course.

Why can I not use my own supervisor?

It’s important that for the purpose of this course, you collaborate with a qualified PCE-CfD supervisor as they are specifically trained to support you in working with the PCE-CfD competency framework and the PCEPS. Your PCE-CfD supervisor is best equipped to accompany you in deepening your PCE-CfD practice and in evaluating and choosing your recording which you will need to submit as part of the course curriculum.

What is the PCEPS?

PCEPS is short for Person-Centred & Experiential Psychotherapy Scale. The version we use contains 10 items. This is why it is sometimes referred to as PCEPS-10. The scale aims to articulate what the approach looks and sounds like in practice. Each of the 10 scale items unpacks and articulates an aspect of the approach in relationship with a client. This is essentially a very helpful learning tool, that you can also use for reflexive practice, and to communicate the approach to clients and colleagues.

In the context of the course, it also allows us to make a judgement as to whether your practice adheres sufficiently to these item descriptors so that we can confidently say that you are offering PCE-CfD therapy. From this we can more confidently assume that outcome measures are a result of a particular practice and develop a more valid and reliable approach.

How many supervision hours do I have to log?

You have to log between four to eight one-to-one supervision sessions with your PCE-CfD supervisor, or you might have the opportunity for group supervision depending on availability. A PCE-CfD group supervision is two hours long for a group of four supervisees. Each two-hour session accounts for 30 minutes of your four to eight hours, so in theory you could have between eight and 16 group supervision sessions depending on availability.

How long does my recording need to be?

We ask you to submit a recording of the entire therapy session of one therapeutic hour (typically 50 minutes). In case you complete a questionnaire with the client in this session, you don’t have to cut it out but leave it in as part of your submission. This segment will not be relevant for marking though. Should for whatever reason a session be cut short, then you are allowed to submit a session that is shorter. However, we cannot accept any session that is any shorter than 40 minutes.

How many clients’ session do I have to log?

You have to log 80 client hours (“therapeutic hours”, can be 50-minute sessions) where you have offered the PCE-CfD counselling relationship. You can start to log these as soon as you have completed the initial five days of the course.

Where can I find the client and supervision logs and the supervisor’s report?

You can find these word dcouments on Moodle under logs and reports.

Recordings

How can I submit a recording on to Moodle?
Please follow these instructions on how to submit a recording onto Moodle.

Can I submit audio or video recordings?

We suggest submitting audio recordings of your session, but we can now accept either audio or video formats. All submissions should be made using standard file formats such as mp3 or mp4. In principle there is no limit on the file size, although smaller files (such as audio rather than video) can be easier to manage and take less time to upload to Moodle.

Do I have to upload six recordings even if the first four reach adherence?

No, only four of your submitted recordings need to reach adherence. This means that if you reach adherence in your first four submitted recordings you won’t need to submit any additional recordings.

What happens when I have reached adherence in four submitted recordings?

Once you have submitted your fourth recording that is assessed to have reached adherence, the feedback form for this recording will also tell you to now submit the client and supervision logs and the supervision report, which can be found on Moodle. The fourth recording assessed to reach adherence might be your fourth, fifth or sixth submission depending on how many of your previous submissions have reached adherence.

How do I decide what recording to choose?

Choosing a recording that adheres to the PCE-CfD competency framework is a collaborative process with your PCE-CfD supervisor. As the competency framework and the work with the PCEPS may be rather new to you, it’s important that you can learn to use the PCEPS in collaboration with your supervisor. We recommend that you bring a recording that you think would score high on the PCEPS to supervision and explore your own evaluation of the recording with your PCE-CfD supervisor.

What is the minimum score I need to reach to get a pass on my submitted recording?

You need a total score of at least 40 (out of a maximum of 60) on the PCEPS to reach adherence to the PCE-CfD model.

How does the marking of my recording work?

One of the academic tutors on the program will listen to one or various segments of your recording – they will listen to a total of 20 minutes. The tutor will then use their knowledge of and skills in PCE-CfD to mark your understanding and practical implementation of the PCEPS and the PCE-CfD competency framework in your client session. Some submissions are moderated by second or third markers, particularly when the initial scores are below or near the adherence threshold (see also the two questions below).

What happens when I reach adherence in a recording?

Once you submitted your recording and an academic tutor on the course has listen to and marked your recording with a score over 40, you will receive a feedback form that contains some observations of your work with your clients, suggestions for further development and the score. You can then submit the next recording. Whilst waiting for feedback you can continue to record sessions and reflect on these for your learning and possible future submissions in due course, although the feedback may be helpful in this process. A collaboration with your supervisor when choosing the recording is highly recommended.

What happens if I don’t reach adherence in a recording?

Once you submitted your recording and an academic tutor on the course has listened to and marked your recording with a score under 40 a second independent moderation marking will take place by another academic tutor. Following this, both markers will discuss the submission and if they agree that your recording scored under 40 on the PCEPS you will receive a feedback form that contains some observations of your work with your clients, suggestions for further development and the agreed score. You are then encouraged to record and submit the next recording. A collaboration with your supervisor when choosing the recording is highly recommended. If, following the second marking process, the agreed total score is 40 or above, you will be assessed as having reached adherence. Occasionally, a third marker may be engaged where appropriate.
