Consultant Neurologist, School of Medicine

I am a Consultant Neurologist and a clinical researcher. I did my medical, neurological and research training in Bucharest (RO), Nancy (FR), Bristol and Nottingham (UK). I was a Research Fellow of both the European Neurological Society and of the European Federation of Neurological Societies, working on projects of advanced imaging techniques and immunomodulation in MS.

I currently lead on an UKRI MRC CARP award to evaluate AI models of NHS clinical data in MS (AIMS), and I am Nottingham PI for a NIHR-funded multi-centre national study on the use of AI for MS phenotyping (MS-PINPOINT). Using AI-powered models, I aim to identify the disease phenotypes which can enable treating the right patient with the right drug at the right time. I am very interested in the use of non-invasive neuromodulation (TMS, FUS, VS) to improve chronic maladaptive neuroplasticity and for neurological recovery, and to tackle brain-body multimorbidity. I am part of the NIHR Nottingham BRC as researcher/collaborator in the Subthemes Radiomics and Clinical translation/Evidence-based Radiomics, and Brain Circuitry and Neuromodulation, and a founding member of Neuromod+ (UK neuromodulation network).

I have a strong interest in the use of available neuroimaging data to understand brain disease, particularly how the results of functional or morphometry MRI methods can be processed through coordinate based meta-analytic approaches to inform applied issues (pain processing, cognition, fatigue), and how artificial intelligence used on routine clinical data can inform decision making. As a member of the European Academy of Neurology (EFNS) Scientific Panels, I co-authored two European Guidelines in Neurology, and I currently co-chair the EAN Coordinating Panel of Neuroscience / Translational neurology. I am a member of the Task Force for the EAN Science School and of the ACT-EU EU (Accelerating clinical trials in the EU) group of the European Medicines Agency.
