Background:
Jim joined CGS as a PhD candidate in 2006 and has recently submitted his body of work.
He holds an undergraduate degree in psychology (1999) and a masters degree in human factors (2005).
He is a graduate member of both the Ergonomics Society and the British Psychological Society
and is working towards professional registration. Prior to commencing his MSc Jim worked in London
for four years in the media and finance sectors.
Current Project:
Fire-fighters must navigate around increasingly complex urban or industrial structures and areas.
Maintaining a sense of orientation; knowing how to return to origin or wayfinding to a point can be
very challenging, given the operational constraints. Fire-fighters must often navigate without the
usual range of environmental stimuli critical to generating and sustaining spatial knowledge. Location
based-services could deliver vital positional information to fire-fighters during an incident. This
research aims to understand and measure the psychological and behavioural profiles of different
spatial representations. Mobile, location aware services would then present the representations to
enhance orientation and spatial awareness in an operational environment. The nature of this information
and how it impacts performance is a key area of the research.
Current Research
- Examining the relationship between critical human factors variables, mental workload, performance, usability using different spatial representations
- Methodological approaches for controlled field assessment navigation aids
- Assessment of individual differences in navigation ability
- Development of frameworks to simplify geographical information for presentation on a small screen device
- Statistics in social science research
