By choosing to study a postgraduate research degree with us, you will be joining a vibrant, multi-national research community of more than 300 postgraduate research students, working alongside postdoctoral researchers, technical specialists and academic staff.

Students join our research community from a wide range of backgrounds including biologists, chemists, nutritionists, economists, mathematicians, computer scientists and sociologists. You can study full or part time, allowing you to combine your studies with work or other responsibilities.

How to apply

For all of our research degrees, the first step is to identify one or more supervisors you would like to work with.

To do this, look through our academic staff research interests. We strongly encourage contacting supervisors before making a formal application, to discuss potential research projects and to ensure the best application possible.

Once you have confirmed supervisors, please name them on your  application form.


Research facilities and equipment

You will benefit from the school's world-class research facilities dedicated to the study of biosciences, including:

  • paperless laboratories housing specialist equipment
  • a 24-hour learning resource centre
  • University Farm and Dairy Centre
  • plus access to other facilities across the university, for example high performance computation.

Sutton Bonington Campus

Sutton Bonington Campus encompasses world-leading laboratories and specialist facilities for studying biosciences and veterinary medicine.

The campus, located 10 miles south of University Park, is home to over 2500 students. You will find everything you need to experience student life on campus including a dedicated Students’ Union, over 40 student-led societies, halls of residence, café, restaurant, bar, sports centre, library and Student Service Centre.

The campus has great national and international transport links, being located just 4km from the M1 motorway (London – Leeds), 5km from East Midlands Parkway (mainline railway into St Pancras International), and 8km from East Midlands International Airport.
