Postgraduate Visiting Students

A Postgraduate visiting student is someone:

  • Studying at a higher education institution overseas
  • Undertaking part of their studies/research in the UK (outside of recognised study abroad/exchange programmes and schemes)
  • With or without funding for their studies
Note: Lecturers from overseas universities who are undertaking research towards a PhD in their home country are usually classified as postgraduate visiting students and not academic.

All visiting PhD may access the visiting PhD student route (formerly known as the postgraduate occasional student route) when visiting Nottingham for research purposes for up to 12 months. A full student application has to be submitted with supporting documentation including evidence of their academic qualifications and English language level. Fees will be charged as published on the tuition fees web pages in the exceptional fees and in full consultation with the host school or department as to the level of fee required for the type of research being undertaken.

Students from the Ningbo, China and Malaysia campuses who wish to spend time at another international campus should first contact their home campus International Office about their nomination to the UK campus.

Financial Issues

Fees are charged for at 75% of the relevant International fee for these students and are calculated on a pro-rata basis.

Fee waivers will be automatically enacted for any student(s) who are explicitly covered by a student exchange agreement or teaching partnership. These agreements are stored on the central partnership databases held by the Office of Global Engagement. Fee waivers can also be applied for student exchanges that are included as an element in externally funded research grants, providing this has been agreed as part of the award. The student application must make reference to the grant and the grant reference number so that eligibility can be confirmed.

Fee waivers will also be considered for students that are not covered by suitable agreements but where a case is made by the proposed supervisor to the Associate Director of the Office of Global Engagement, in consultation with their HoS/HoD, that the research being undertaken at Nottingham will lead to a joint paper or joint project or collaboration. The Head of School needs to authorise that the costs of hosting the student regarding consumable costs will be absorbed by the school.
