 Cell Sorting

The Facility's high specification sterile cell sorters are located in our main facility and are open to all University of Nottingham research groups and by agreement with external parties. All sorting is conducted by facility staff, so no training is required.

If you would like to access the cell sorters for the first time contact David Onion or Nicola Croxall, experienced users can book directly using the online booking system.

University of Nottingham staff and students can access the full configuration of all machines on our Workspace

Beckman Coulter Astrios EQ

This top of the range sterile cell sorter allows high purity isolation of cells from mixed populations. With 5 lasers, 23 PMTs and 4 side scatter PMTs, the Astrios EQ has great flexibility, along with dual PMT enhanced forward scatter for sub-micron particles. As well as cell sorting, the machine can be used for analytical work: in particular for multi-colour experiments and those requiring UV, violet or yellow/green lasers.

Cell Sorting

  • High speed sorting – up to 70,000 cells per second
  • 6 way sorting, allowing 6 independent populations to be sorted simultaneously
  • Direct sorting into microplates (up to 384 well plates) or onto slides
  • Single cell cloning
  • Housed in class II safety cabinet for improved sterility and biosafety

Analysis

  • UV (355nm), Violet (405nm), Blue (488nm), Yellow/Green (561nm) and Red (640nm) lasers, each offset and focussed through pinhole to separate detector arrays
  • 23 Colours, 4 Side scatter PMTs
  • Dual PMT enhanced Forward scatter for sub-micron particles
  • High speed digital data acquisition
  • Each parameter available as peak height, area, width, log height, log area
  • Post acquisition compensation

Beckman Coulter MoFlo XDP

MoFlo with screens

Another top of the range sterile cell sorter, which allows high purity isolation of cells from mixed populations. With 4 lasers and 14 PMTs, the MoFlo XDP has great flexibility. As well as cell sorting, the machine can be used for analytical work, in particular for multi-colour experiments and those requiring violet or yellow/green lasers.

Cell Sorting

  • High speed sorting – up to 65,000 cells per second
  • 4 way sorting, allowing 4 independent populations to be sorted simultaneously
  • Direct sorting into microplates (up to 384 well plates) or onto slides
  • Single cell cloning
  • Housed in class II safety cabinet for improved sterility and biosafety

Analysis

  • Violet (405nm), Blue (488nm), Yellow/Green (561nm) and Red (640nm) lasers, each offset and focussed through pinhole to separate detector arrays (Violet and Green co-linear)
  • 14 Colours
  • High speed digital data acquisition
  • Each parameter available as peak height, area, width, log height, log area
  • Post acquisition compensation
