Entry requirements

Foundation courses

A levels and STPM are widely accepted for undergraduate entry and it is rare for Foundation courses to be required - although they may be recommended if the wrong mix of subjects has been taken for your chosen degree.

Our foundation courses

Students who have completed their SPM can be considered for entry into our foundation courses with a minimum of 6 Bs (excluding Religious Studies, Moral Studies and Languages). B is required in Maths, Additional Maths and Physics for Engineering and Physical Sciences, Maths and Biology or Chemistry for Science and Maths for Social Sciences and Business.

We offer foundation courses for students who are not qualified for direct undergraduate entry.

  • Business, Law and Social Sciences, taught at University of Nottingham International College
  • Engineering and Physical Sciences, taught in our Faculty of Engineering
  • Science, taught at University of Nottingham International College

Undergraduate courses

Full-time courses across our five faculties typically last for three to four years, although some degrees such as medicine and architecture have a longer duration.

Undergraduate entry requirements

Our Undergraduate Prospectus lists entry requirements for A levels and International Baccalaureate students for each course.

As well as our own foundation courses, we accept foundation certificates from selected providers in the UK.

We can accept the following average grades as A level equivalents for entry to most undergraduate programmes:

  • STPM (Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia): ranging from B+,B+,B+ to A,A,A
  • GPA – Ministry of Education Matriculation certificate (one year programme): ranging from 3.55 to 3.8
  • ATAR – South Australian Matriculation (SAM) or other Australian matriculation programmes: ranging from 90 to 94
  • Canadian International Matriculation programme (CIMP) or Canadian Ontario-Secondary Programme (ICPU): ranging from 90% to 94%
  • MUFY: ranging from 80% to 88%
  • Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) - Chinese Matriculation: ranging from 5 grade As (A1 or A2) to 3 grade A1 & 2 grade A2 
  • 2-3 years Diploma programme from local universities / polytechnics (post SPM). or 2 years - American Credit Transfer Program from INTEC: GPA 3.2 and above can be considered on a case by case basis
  • 1-year Foundation programme from local universities/colleges (post SPM) or 1 – year ASASIpintar Foundation programme from local universities / college (post SPM): GPA ranging from 3.55 to 3.8
  • American Degree Transfer Programme: ranging from 3.10-3.00 to 4.00-3.80

This summary is provided as guidance and requirements may vary for individual courses, which often require high grades in relevant subjects.

Students who have completed at least one year at a university in Malaysia and achieved good grades can be considered for direct entry to our undergraduate degree courses.

We can accept UCLES GCE grades in English (C or above) as meeting our English language requirements.

Students taking APs or SATs should refer to our entry requirements for the USA.

Masters courses

We offer a wide range of postgraduate masters degree programmes across our five faculties. Full-time masters courses typically last for one year.

Masters entry requirements

Applicants should hold a bachelors degree of a good standard from a recognised university, usually in a relevant subject area. Check course details in our Postgraduate Prospectus to see whether your chosen course requires the equivalent of an Upper Second Class (2:1) or Lower Second Class (2:2) degree.

Our entry requirements for degrees from Malaysian universities vary depending on the university where you have studied and the course you are applying for at Nottingham. The summary below is provided as guidance but requirements may vary for individual courses and we do require higher grades from some universities.

You may be able to take a pre-masters course at University of Nottingham International College to qualify for our masters programmes. We also accept pre-masters qualifications from selected providers in the UK.

Research courses

Our PhD courses, available across a wide range of subject areas, typically include three years of full time research followed by an optional writing-up period of one year to complete your thesis.

PhD entry requirements

A masters and bachelors degree from a recognised university are usually required for PhD entry.

Typical minimum GPA requirements from Malaysian universities are GPA 2.8 to 3.2 out of 4.0.

For all research degrees, we recommend that you make initial enquiries with a potential supervisor or the relevant University of Nottingham school / department before applying. A research proposal is required when submitting your application.
