Cultural, Media and Visual Studies - which course is for you?

Through objects and images, sounds and words, we declare our passions, entertain each other and influence the world around us. Cultural, Media and Visual Studies (CMVS) examines and makes sense of all this activity. 

At Nottingham, the department offers four themes of study, each with their own degrees.

International Media and Communications


How does the media shape our society and the way we understand ourselves and the world? This course is perfect if you want to learn about the global media landscape and the connection between media and communication, technologies, identities and social change.

  • Build a global outlook learning about diverse media cultures as part of an international student and staff community
  • Learn a language through the option to pair International Media and Communications with French or German, or through the many options in the Language Centre.


Film and Screen Studies


This subject is perfect if you're interested in learning more about how screen content gets made, who makes it, and why it matters in today’s world. Gain the skills and knowledge to make it in creative industries such as film and television.

Cultural and Creative Industries


Whether you are interested in arts, film, music, gaming, performance, heritage, and more, you can pursue your passion here! Learn how cultural and creative industries operate and know the important trends in this growing sector.

Art History and Visual Culture


Art isn’t just something you find in museums - it’s everywhere, shaping how we see and understand the world. From Renaissance paintings to viral videos, images have the power to influence culture, politics and society. Learn how art and visual culture have shaped
societies past and present, and gain the tools you need to decode the images that define our world.

Joint honours subjects

Did you know you can combine Art History and Visual Culture and English, and Modern Languages with International Media and Communications? 

Foundation Year students can progress to a wide range of our joint honours degrees, while you can also build your own degree and study a range of subjects in our Liberal Arts course.

Opportunities for all students

Whichever degree you choose, there are some common opportunities which are open to all students in the department. These are:

Hollywood internships

This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity lets you complete a paid summer internship at one of the leading Hollywood studios or talent agencies!

You could spend ten weeks involved in things such as reading incoming film and television scripts, collecting audience data, filming interviews, and working front of house at special screenings and industry events.

These prestigious and highly competitive internships are supported through the generous Peter Rice Award. Peter is former Chair Disney General Entertainment Content and a Nottingham graduate.

Develop valuable employment skills, before completing a placement at a local business, on our second-year optional Arts Work Placement module

You will also have access to work experience and volunteering opportunities via the Creative Students Network.
