It was great getting hands-on experience. These excavations allowed me to see the full process of archaeological investigation in practice; from the first spade in the ground through to site recording and finds processing.

Museum of Archaeology

An award-winning centre of excellence, holding archaeology finds covering a quarter of a million years!

The museum also has a dedicated student volunteer programme to train and support students wanting careers in museums, heritage or education. You can get involved in:

  • collection management
  • researching, cataloguing and conservation of museum objects
  • outreach and education programmes
  • the museum's travelling exhibition, 'In Search of Margidunum', which brings real Roman artefacts, replicas and dressing-up clothes to local schools.

When it comes to applying for jobs in the heritage sector, if you haven’t done other things, you’re not going to stand out. Take those voluntary opportunities, go on the digs, get involved with schools, the museum, the Lakeside Arts centre... You'll stand out and have an amazing time doing it.

I signed up for Nottingham Classics Out-and-about (NoCOut) to gain experience in schools for my future career. I'm much more confident in my ability to tailor presentations for different audiences and to communicate effectively. I loved working with other Classics students and I’m really proud of the activities we were able to create together. Dressing up as a Roman became a standard afternoon for me!
