Studying Sport and Exercise Science at Nottingham

Find out how our students combine cutting-edge science with a passion for sport, health and human performance.

If you're passionate about the science behind sport, exercise, health and performance, our Sport and Exercise Science degree could be the perfect choice for you. In this video from our Undergraduate Open Day, Assistant Professor Paul Harlow and third-year student Daniel give an in-depth look at the course, the research that underpins the teaching and what makes Nottingham such an exceptional place to study this subject.

Paul shares his journey into the field, combining an early interest in both science and sport. He explains how the course is built on a foundation of cutting-edge research, particularly in areas such as the physiology of ageing, brain health and muscle function. The department is continually exploring innovations in sport science, including the use of technologies like Google Glass to study athlete performance.

Research-driven teaching and facilities

One of the standout features of our Sport and Exercise Science degree is the exceptional facilities and research-led teaching. Students benefit from access to advanced equipment usually reserved for medical schools, including:

  • MRI scanners
  • exercise testing facilities
  • wet labs for molecular biology techniques like PCR and Western blotting
  • an anatomy suite with prosections, dissections and 3D anatomy modelling

These resources enable students to engage deeply with the science of sport, health and the human body, far beyond traditional textbook learning.

Career opportunities

Sport and Exercise Science is a competitive field, but the depth and quality of our programme open many doors. Our graduates pursue careers in:

  • graduate-entry medicine
  • clinical and health-related fields
  • elite sport and performance analysis
  • sport and exercise research

The course’s scientific standards aligns with other Life Sciences degrees, equipping students with a solid foundation for a wide range of postgraduate studies and professional roles.

Who is this course for?

The degree is ideal for students with a strong interest in science and a curiosity about the effects of exercise on the body – whether in the context of health, clinical applications or elite sport. It's also a great option for those who are still exploring specific career paths but have a passion for sport, exercise and health science.
