We met four of our natural sciences graduates to hear how their experience at Nottingham has helped shape their career path. Whether it was a year abroad, extracurricular involvement or career guidance, their stories demonstrate how a degree in natural sciences can open doors to a wide range of exciting career possibilities.
Hear from Jenika, Charlotte, Megan and Lorenz and find out more about their stories in the four videos below.
Jenika is a Senior Proposal Associate at FIECON, and before she started at Nottingham, she wasn’t sure what career path she wanted to take. She joined FIECON on their graduate scheme as a Health Economic Consultant, before moving into the Business Development team.
“I particularly enjoyed studying natural sciences because it gave me the opportunity to study biology, chemistry and maths. I could figure out as I went along which one I preferred most, and each year could choose the subjects I wanted to develop further.
"A real highlight for me at Nottingham was my year abroad which I spent studying natural sciences in Australia in my third year. In my final year, I turned to the Careers Service for support. They helped me with one-on-one sessions reviewing my CV and provided valuable tips that I used when applying for jobs."
Charlotte, now a secondary school teacher, found the support of the Careers Service at Nottingham invaluable, long after she graduated.
“I found the Careers Service incredibly helpful, especially in my final year, but their support didn’t end there. Even after I graduated and decided to switch career paths, they were welcoming and eager to assist me in exploring my options, providing valuable resources that guided my decision.
"My degree sparked a passion for science in me which I now love sharing with my students, helping them develop an appreciation for the subject. Working with children brings me immense joy, making each day unique, although it comes with its fair share of challenges. Their big personalities always keep things interesting!”
Megan is currently completing her PhD in Experimental Physics at the University of Cambridge.
"My natural sciences degree is integral to where I am today. I never imagined I’d pursue a PhD, but it was through natural sciences that I gained the confidence and opportunity to explore different skills. I now thoroughly enjoy meeting and collaborating with like-minded individuals who are passionate about what they do.
"One of the highlights for me was the course community, along with participating in the Nottingham Advantage Award. I was able to earn credits through natural sciences working as a student ambassador, peer mentoring and working on comms and social media management.”
Lorenz believes he wouldn’t be pursuing Graduate Entry Medicine at Nottingham if he hadn’t first completed his natural sciences degree.
“Studying natural sciences helped me discover my passion for medical physics and medical chemistry. I also worked as a Student Ambassador, both digitally and in person, which helped me develop communication skills that will be invaluable in a hospital setting. Nottingham provided me with so many opportunities – I took part in different societies and collaborated on various projects with academics.”
