Making the most of your time as a student

Lucy’s experience as a Physics student

Have you ever wondered what student life is like after your lectures are done for the day?

With a thriving city just a few miles down the road and nearly 300 societies and sports clubs to join, you can do as much or as little as you like.

We spoke with Lucy - a third-year Physics with Medical Physics student, to find out how she spends her free time.

In her first year, Lucy lived in Willoughby Hall, which is one of the catered accommodation options on campus. She really enjoyed the social nature of the food hall, giving her a chance to meet people from her accommodation that weren’t her immediate neighbours. Her favourite memory of her time in halls was the Christmas formal, which was a great chance to have some fun with her new friends.

Lucy also has an active social life outside of halls, doing lots of activities to keep her mind and body active.

Her favourite society at university is Korfball. Korfball is a mixed-gender sport similar to basketball or netball. It’s a great way to stay active, have fun and meet people of all ages outside your course and halls. Lucy is on the committee for Korfball, which means she has additional responsibilities within the team, making her a key part of the society.

She also enjoys getting creative with the Photography Society, who regularly go on photography walks to find inspiration out in the wild. This is a great way to meet fellow creative minds and practice your skills in a chilled atmosphere.

Last but not least, Lucy writes for Impact Magazine, which is the Students’ Union’s student-run publication. You don’t need any previous experience or qualifications to write for Impact, just a passion for writing and the desire to learn.

During her time, Lucy has written a number of articles, including one in the printed magazine focusing on choosing hope in the face of climate change. She co-wrote this article with a fellow student and was able to talk to climate scientists about their specialism. This gave Lucy the opportunity to practice her scientific writing skills in a brand-new context.
