A journey of determination and gratitude

First-year Medicine student: Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences Scholarship Awards recipient

For this first-year medical student, receiving the Alumni Scholarship Award has been a life-changing opportunity. Through hard work and determination, studying medicine has become a reality, shaped by both personal and professional experiences.

The scholarship has eased financial stress and allowed them to fully embrace all that university life has to offer – helping them to stay focused on their studies while pursuing their passion for medicine.

What brought you to the university?

“Growing up in Leeds with my parents and two younger brothers, I was always close to my family, and their support has shaped who I am today. Both my parents have worked for the NHS as Ward Housekeepers. Coming from a family with no previous university experience, I am proud to be the first to pursue higher education. I consider myself incredibly lucky to be studying medicine a dream that seemed far out of reach just a few years ago. I was inspired by my parents' dedication to their work in the NHS, and that led me to work as a Housekeeper in A&E for two years. This experience not only allowed me to contribute to my family financially but also solidified my passion for medicine.

“My path to university was shaped by my desire to study medicine, a goal I set for myself during my time in sixth form. I studied biology, chemistry, and maths, finishing with two As and an A*, despite the immense pressure of balancing my studies with university applications and extracurricular activities. Sixth form was an incredibly stressful time, but my parents always emphasised the importance of education, and my friends provided me with invaluable support. Their encouragement helped me through some of my toughest moments.

“Coming to university has been a huge step, not just academically but socially as well. The transition to university life has been difficult, especially since I’ve always been very close with my family. However, I’m excited about the opportunities that lie ahead, and I know that I can make the most of my time here.”

Why Nottingham?

“I chose the University because of the course structure. I love that the university takes a holistic approach to medical training, combining academic excellence with a focus on community and healthcare accessibility. The multicultural student community has made me feel included and has allowed me to engage with people from all sorts of backgrounds, which is an experience I truly value. I feel incredibly fortunate to be here and am determined to take full advantage of all the opportunities available to me.”

Favourite module/Campus life

“My first few months at university have been both exciting and overwhelming. I live in St. Marks accommodation with 11 other students, all of whom have been kind and welcoming. The social aspects of university life, like joining the Medicine and Netball societies, have been incredibly enjoyable. Meeting people from different places has made me feel more connected to the university, and I’ve gained a sense of belonging.

At the same time, adjusting to the demanding academic schedule has been tough. The sheer volume of content each week, along with the challenge of finding a routine, has been difficult. It’s easy to compare myself to other students, who seem to be managing the workload better, but I remind myself to stay positive and open-minded. I know that with time, I’ll adjust and develop the right balance.”

How the scholarship has helped

“Receiving the scholarship has been a tremendous relief. It has allowed me to focus on my studies and extracurricular activities without the constant stress of financial concerns. The financial support has also enabled me to become more involved in university life, something I wouldn't have been able to do otherwise.

The scholarship has made a significant difference to my overall well-being and quality of life here, and I am incredibly grateful for it. With the support I’ve received, I hope to one day pay it forward and help others, just as I have been helped. From the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone who has made this possible for me and my family. Your generosity has made a lasting impact on my journey, and I look forward to continuing to grow and succeed at university.
