Muhammad has always been driven by a deep desire to help others. With the support of the Alumni Scholarship Award, he has been able to fully focus on his studies and immerse himself in all the opportunities university life has to offer, as he works towards his dream of becoming a doctor.
“I am incredibly grateful to have been awarded the alumni scholarship, which has already made a significant difference in my life. I grew up in Grangetown, a vibrant and diverse area of Cardiff, Wales. Coming from a single-parent household, I have always been inspired by my mother. Her unwavering dedication and hard work to support our family have been a constant source of motivation for me. As the first in my family to attend university, I am proud to be taking this step and paving the way for new opportunities.
“Throughout my education I attended state schools, starting at St Cyres and later studying at Cardiff and Vale College, where I completed A levels in chemistry, biology, mathematics, and the Welsh Baccalaureate. I also undertook an Extended Project Qualification, which allowed me to explore the ethics around treating smoking in great detail. I enjoyed mathematics for its logical challenges, but it was the human aspects of biology that truly fascinated me and shaped my aspirations.”
“My decision to study medicine was deeply personal. Witnessing my grandmother battle and beat cancer twice, gave me a profound appreciation for the role of healthcare professionals, and the impact a compassionate doctor can have on someone’s life. This experience ignited my interest in healthcare, and as I explored what medicine entails, I realised that it aligned perfectly with my strengths and sense of purpose.
“Choosing a medical school was difficult, but Nottingham stood out to me for several reasons. I felt strongly connected to the university during the open day, where the welcoming atmosphere and innovative teaching methods resonated with me. The opportunity to participate in full-body dissections was a significant selling point, as this unique aspect of the course offers invaluable hands-on learning which is exactly what I was looking for.
Although I am keeping an open mind about future specialities, I currently have a strong interest in A&E, where I hope to work in a fast-paced environment and use a comprehensive understanding of the human body to treat a diverse range of patients.”

“My first term at Nottingham has been an enriching experience. I am currently living in student accommodation and have thoroughly enjoyed meeting people from diverse backgrounds in the common rooms and at various events. In my course, I have particularly enjoyed the practical elements, such as learning to take blood pressure manually and practising patient consultations. Looking ahead, I am excited about studying anatomy through dissections in the second semester, and gaining real-world experience during hospital and GP visits.”
“Receiving the scholarship was an unforgettable moment for me. It felt like a weight had been lifted, providing me with the financial support to focus fully on my studies. This funding has enabled me to purchase essential items for my course, such as a stethoscope and textbooks, without the added stress of worrying about affordability. Your support has made it possible for me to immerse myself in my studies and make the most of this incredible opportunity.”
