A scholarship that opens doors

Amelia Brand, first-year Physiotherapy student: Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences Scholarship Awards recipient

Starting university is an exciting yet daunting experience, especially when financial concerns come into play. For Amelia, receiving the Alumni Scholarship Award has made all the difference.

From easing the stress of living away from home to opening up new opportunities for career development, the scholarship has allowed Amelia to fully embrace university life, focus on her studies, and pursue her passion for helping others.

What brought you to the university?

“I’m from Basingstoke, Hampshire, where I live with my mum and younger brother. I will be the first in my family to attend university, as neither of my parents completed a higher education degree.
“In college I studied sports and exercise science, biology, and psychology. I achieved an A in psychology, an A* in sports and exercise science and a C in biology. I knew I always wanted to do physiotherapy at university due to my interest in anatomy and physiology as well as my desire to help people.”

Why Nottingham?

“I love that Nottingham is an inclusive university with so many opportunities for students. The green and peaceful campus has a positive impact on my day, and I was drawn to the case-based learning structure of my course, which applies real-life patient scenarios to our studies. After university, I plan to work for the NHS, with aspirations of opening my own physiotherapy clinic.”

Campus life

“My first term at Nottingham has been an enjoyable experience. I live off-campus in student accommodation called Nottingham Two. I really like my halls because it looks pretty, it is close to campus, I have easy access to food shops, and my flat mates are friendly. I like how practical my course is, and I enjoy working in mini groups to do research projects.

“Also, I have joined the Medics Cheerleading Squad as well as the Black Feminist society. I really enjoy cheerleading as it keeps me active, and I enjoy dancing. Black Feminist society has been a fun way to meet people as well as finding ways to unwind and relax through activities such as painting and creating.”

How the scholarship has helped

"When I found out that I was awarded the scholarship I was so excited! I knew that it would reduce my stress and anxiety about how I would be able to fund living so far away from home, without feeling bad for asking my parents for financial support."

This scholarship has also allowed me to explore additional qualifications, such as the sports massage course the university offers, which will expand my job prospects.
