Student life at Nottingham

Day in the life of an Architectural Environment Engineering

Meet Juan, an Architectural Environment Engineering student. A typical day in his life starts with a lecture, perhaps on construction materials or the importance of sustainable building design. It might involve group projects that blend architecture and environment engineering, giving practical experience that helps prepare him for his future career.

In his vlog, Juan walks you through facilities on campus, such as the George Green Library and lecture halls and shares the vibrant campus life you’ll also enjoy. You’ll see what it’s like to study at a department ranked 3rd for Building in the UK (The Complete University Guide 2026 and The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2026).

Our architectural environmental engineering societies

University may seem daunting. It’s a time when there are lots of changes in your life, but don’t worry, you won’t be doing it alone. You’ll make loads of new friends, and what better way to socialise than by joining a society!

As an architectural environment engineering student, you may want to try societies from a few of our departments. If you’re in love with all things architecture, we have you covered with our Tongue & Groove society. More into the building side of things? CivSoc would be perfect for you. Whatever you’re interested in, all our societies will be full of likeminded people. We have a society for practically everything you could want to try, so you’ll have no problems fitting in.

Learn all about our engineering and architecture societies.

Gain essential skills

Our modules cover areas such as thermofluids, project management, building performance, environmental design, and digital modelling, giving you the tools to understand how buildings function and how to improve them.

You’ll develop both technical expertise and creative problem-solving skills, preparing you to tackle real-world challenges in the built environment.

A place to grow, learn and belong

You'll be based at University Park Campus, which has a blend of nature, history, and culture. With acres of green parkland, beautiful historic buildings, and a picturesque boating lake, it’s a truly inspiring place to live and learn.

Specifically for your course, you'll have access to varied learning environments such as our design studios and award-winning Creative Energy Homes.

Learning that goes beyond the classroom

In your second year, you’ll have the opportunity to study at our Ningbo campus in China, gaining global insight into architecture and engineering in a different cultural and environmental context.

This experience will introduce you to new academic environments, teaching styles, and cultural viewpoints. This will broaden your intellectual horizons and develop your critical thinking.

If you choose to study one of our courses with an industrial year, you'll get the chance to undertake a year-long work placement. This is a great way to bring your course to life in an active working environment. It'll also enable you to build your skills and experience the challenges and innovations in the field.
