Undergraduate pharmacy students in a laboratory

School of Pharmacy

The UK has long been at the forefront of healthcare in the world. Our University has been integral to that global excellence. We have a century-long strategic partnership with Boots, which was founded in Nottingham 175 years ago and is still headquartered in the city.

In the 1920s, founder Jesse Boot invested in our University to create a training ground for the nation’s best chemists. Nottingham’s role in looking after people’s health has gone from strength to strength ever since.

Over the last century, Nottingham has given the world MRI; Ibuprofen, the breast cancer prognosis index, and hundreds more innovations that have improved the health and wellbeing of billions of people across the world.

2025 marks a century of the School of Pharmacy at Nottingham, and 20 years in our Malaysia Campus.

About our courses

Much of your learning will be case-based to ensure that the scientific and professional elements are integrated from day one.

You will learn through a combination of:

  • lectures
  • practical classes
  • small workshops
  • tutorial groups
  • on placement

You will also study alongside students in other healthcare disciplines; for example with trainee doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and dieticians.

The school benefits from a number of clinical teachers and pharmacy professionals who spend part of their time teaching and part of their time working in a hospital or community pharmacy.

All of our academic staff act as a personal tutor for undergraduate students. This means you will have support and encouragement from some of the country's top academics.

To become a UK-registered pharmacist after the four-year MPharm, you must successfully complete a one-year pre-registration training period after graduation. We will provide support to help you secure this. The vast majority of our students have places arranged well before graduation. For more information about registration, please see the pharmacy regulations website. The school also provides support at the end of your pre-registration year to help you prepare for your GPhC examination.

Career opportunities for pharmacists are plentiful and varied. While most pharmacists are based in hospital or community pharmacies, others work in areas such as clinical trials, quality assurance and formulation in the pharmaceutical industry, or in academic pharmacy and scientific positions within the NHS. Recent professional career developments include working with GPs and providing prescribing advice.

Professional recognition

Our four-year Masters in Pharmacy (MPharm) course has full accreditation from the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). We are currently working towards accreditation for our five-year course.

We offer students the chance to apply to spend some or all of their second year studying at University of Nottingham Malaysia, based near Semenyih, which is approximately one hour's drive from the capital Kuala Lumpur.

Another option available is for students undertaking their semester-long research project in year three to apply to study either at our Malaysia Campus or at one of our partner institutions overseas. Recent destinations have included Australia, Hong Kong, USA, Canada, Italy and France.

For more details about study abroad options, please see our school study abroad page.

MPharm students are required to have an interview. See our interview guide for details.
