Light path through dark avenue of trees

Rani's story

The story may contain themes of a sensitive nature. See our guidance on viewing the exhibition.

Rani contributed to Inside Out at a difficult time in her life. She described her feelings as if she was trapped on a path that she needed to break away from, but that she knew it was going to be difficult to do so. As she said:

I am on the same path back and forward; I keep walking the same path every time. It feels like it’s not a choice but is automatic. Why would I find another way if I can see a really clear path ahead?

She used the metaphor of a forest to describe her state of mind. With tall thin trees marking the edges of the path, but with glimpses of light at the end of an alternative route. However this new way is old and overgrown, full of nettles.

On seeing Andy’s representation of her mental picture she said:

Wow it looks amazing. You seem to have captured what I said perfectly. I really like how you can see the light shining through on the path and you get a peek at what greenery and light is outside on the other path. It really captures the image that I had inside my head.

I have been excitedly showing the picture of the painting to all my friends and family.
