As part of its commitment to provide high-quality staff development with reliable funding for local NHS Trusts and healthcare organisations, the university is currently developing a new Enhanced Clinical Practitioner Apprenticeship for launch in January 2025.

The new apprenticeship programme develops practitioners with the knowledge, skills and behaviours to provide a high standard of complex care for patients, using enhanced levels of clinical judgement.

  • PGCert Enhanced Clinical Practice
  • PGCert Enhanced Clinical Practice (Clinical Education)
  • PGCert Enhanced Clinical Practice (Paediatrics / Neonates)

18 months (including end-point assessment)

Entry requirements

Apprentices must be registered with either one of the statutory healthcare regulators. 

Apprentices are normally expected to hold a relevant degree with an award of 2:2 or above (or have demonstrable equivalent experience). 

Apprentices usually have at least 2 years post-registration experience and need to have completed any period of preceptorship.

Other requirements

Level 2 (equivalent to grades 4-9 at GCSE) or above in English and maths. Apprentices who do not provide suitable Level 2 English certification and do not hold an appropriate English language equivalent qualification from this list, will also need to provide an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) result that is dated within the last two years.

The minimum requirement for this programme is an overall score of 6.5, with no less than a 6.0 in each of the individual elements. The university’s policy around this can be found here.

Apprentices must be working in a job role that provides opportunities to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours outlined in the Level 6 Enhanced Clinical Practitioner Apprenticeship Standard.

Please note the apprenticeship route is only available to UK/EU/EEA nationals or apprentices that have lived and have had a right to work in the UK for three years or more and work a minimum of 50% of their time in England.

Start date January 2025
Fees  £7000 to be paid by the employer (can be covered by the apprenticeship levy). Non-levy paying employers may be eligible for funding.
