Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement

Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) are integral to the SPCR-funded research that we deliver. Public contributors are involved across all research - advising, and sometimes leading on, how research is designed, carried out, shared and adopted and also in governance - helping to decide what projects are funded. More information about PPIE

The NIHR School for Primary Care Research (SPCR) joined the Shared Commitment for Public Involvement in February 2025. This centres on the commitment that public involvement is important, expected and possible in all types of health and social care research.

We are guided by our public involvement and engagement strategy which is monitored by members of the public through our public steering group.

The NIHR SPCR provides opportunities for public partners to meaningfully influence the SPCR’s decision-making through our public steering group, public involvement in our Board and involvement of the public in our funding panels.

The NIHR SPCR is dedicated to continually improving how we work in partnership with patients, carers, communities, and the public. This includes identifying opportunities to share reflections and learn from others to improve and grow.

You do not need any experience to become a public contributor, but there are several guidance documents, resources and training opportunities that might help you in your role. There are opportunities for training and knowledge-sharing within, and beyond, the SPCR community to build skills for, and promote, inclusive and innovative public involvement.

If you would like to find out more about the opportunities for public involvement here at Nottingham please contact the team at: spcr-support@nottingham.ac.uk. For opportunities across the SPCR partner network please contact the relevant PPIE leads.
