Our BA in Education will allow you to challenge educational practices and debate issues, such as equality in education, learning in the digital age, and the ways in which cognition and development affect the way people learn. You'll learn about formal and informal education from different angles like sociology, psychology, philosophy, history, and politics. We'll connect these subjects to build your skills and knowledge and enrich your understanding.

About our course

The BA Education is a friendly and collaborative course with small group sizes. How tutors work together with students and students work with each other models good practice and helps you develop transferable skills that will be beneficial for your future career.

You will be taught by expert staff whose research aims to improve global education practices and policy.

Lectures and seminars are delivered in small groups, providing regular and consistent tutor-student contact and opportunities to discuss, collaborate, and lead the learning. There will be many course-related, but also extra-curricular "student activities" available to you which will also enhance your learning: field trips to local education settings such as city farms, museums, galleries, community gardens, and more.

Teaching methods:

  • Lectures
  • Seminars
  • Tutorials
  • Placements
  • Field trips
  • Workshops
  • Visiting speakers

Learning isn't confined to the classroom and education graduates don't all go on to become teachers. In fact, half of those working in the education sector are making a difference in a range of roles, including many you might not have imagined, such as:

  • local government
  • civil service
  • educational organisation bodies
  • education in museums and prisons
  • charities and NGOs
  • community and educational theatre
  • educational administration at school and university level
  • educational marketing, PR and journalism
  • education business and commerce
  • graduate training programmes such as IntoUniversity

Placements module

Our course offers an excellent opportunity to put your understanding of educational theories into practice in a real-world setting, with our placements module. You will experience working in an educational environment that will enhance your skills as an educational professional.

Faculty of Social Sciences Placements Programme

We offer a range of placement and internship opportunities, alongside detailed career guidance, to equip you with the tools to succeed in the graduate jobs market. We have over 150 placements available each year. These opportunities run one day a week during term time, for a total of 70 hours, and easily fit around your academic timetable. Take a look at the placement opportunities in the Faculty of Social Sciences.

You can broaden your horizons by studying abroad for a semester at our Malaysia campus. Students on the BA Education have also benefitted from the international links between the School of Education and other universities, including Lund University in Sweden, where students were hosted for an educational visit, and have been involved in online collaborative learning activities.

Please note: To study abroad you will need to achieve the relevant academic requirements as set by the university and meet the selection criteria of both the university and the partner institution. The partner institution is under no obligation to accept you even if you do meet the relevant criteria.

Applications are made through the standard UCAS process. No interview usually is required.

We want your application process to be as smooth as possible and have sat with our Admissions Manager, Maryam to talk you through it.

Join us and be guided by our Admissions Manager, Maryam. With her expert guidance, you'll discover some common myths we hear from potential students. From your reference worries to your predicted grades, and everything in between, Maryam clears up some key points you need to know to start your university experience.
