Below is a table showing courses which most commonly accept the Access HE Diploma and BTEC qualifications and their entry requirements. These qualifications are the minimum requirements and you may need additional GCSEs or other qualifications – you should check with the relevant school or department for your subject. You may also be called to attend an interview.

Pass the Access to HE Diploma; To include 45 credits at level 3. Of these a minimum of 24 credits should be achieved at Merit or above

BTEC Extended Diploma grades DDM plus GCSE English and maths grade C or above.

Education Marts (X3MA):

BTEC Extended Diploma grades DDD. Plus GCSE English and maths grade C or above.

Education BA:

Pass the Access to HE Diploma with 60 credits overall; 45 graded at level 3. Of these graded level 3 credits 30 credits must be achieved at Merit or above with at least 12 of those achieved at Distinction. Plus GCSE English and maths grade C or above.

Education MArts:

Pass the Access to HE Diploma with 60 credits overall; 45 graded at level 3. Of these graded level 3 credits 36 credits must be achieved at Merit or above with at least 18 of those achieved at Distinction. Plus GCSE English and maths grade C or above.

All courses offered by the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Extended Diploma in appropriate engineering subject: DDD including distinction in maths and further maths; plus grade C in GCSE maths Pass the Access to HE Diploma in engineering, science, construction or civil engineering including 18 credits of level 3 maths at distinction and 12 credits of level 3 science (physics) or engineering at distinction; plus GCSE English grade C
Engineering with Foundation Year H100

Extended Diploma: DDD; Plus GCSE English grade C, GCSE Maths grade B and GCSE Physics grade B (or Double Award/Science & Additional Science grade BB

If applicants don’t meet our GCSE Maths criteria this can be compensated for with the following BTEC units:

  • BTEC Engineering unit 28: “Further Mathematics for Engineering Technicians”
  • Applied Science has two 5 credit units (unit 7 and unit 8) “Mathematical Calculations for Science” and “Using Statistics in Science”

Medical Physiology and Therapeutics

A science-based BTEC Extended Diploma: DDD-DDM

Pass the Access to HE Diploma; 60 credits overall; 45 credits at level 3. Of the level 3 credits, at least 30 credits should be passed at distinction, and 15 credits at merit or above. This should include at least 15 credits of either a chemistry or biology or science-based subject at distinction.

We accept the Extended Diploma in the following courses: health and social care (health studies), applied science (medical science) and applied science (forensic science) and animal management. Minimum of DDM with GCSE A-C grades in English, maths and science (one AS Level in biology, physics and chemistry can compensate for lack of science modules)

Please note the following requirements for the BTEC L3 National Extended Diploma in health and social care: Minimum of DDM with GCSE A-C grades in English, maths and science (one AS Level in biology, physics and chemistry can compensate for lack of modules) and to include 60 credits out the following possible 90 credits listed below:

  • Development Through the Life Stages (10 credits)
  • Anatomy and Physiology for Health and Social Care (10 credits)
  • Physiological Disorders (10 credits)
  • Nutrition for Health and Social Care (10 credits)
  • Nutrition (10 credits)

Please note: we do accept a combination of BTEC qualifications (equivalent to one A level) and 2 A levels (preferably Biology A level).

Pass the Access to HE Diploma: Pass the Access to Nursing and Midwifery to include 45 credits at level 3 of which 30 must be at Distinction and the remaining 15 at Merit or above. The diploma must include 24 credits at level 3 in biology (preferably human biology) all achieved at Distinction. Plus GCSE English and maths at grade C or above. We no longer accept level 2 equivalence for GCSE English and maths. Please note modules relating to conducting and writing up lab reports will not count towards biology credits

Please note Access courses to Higher education prior to 2009 will not have current currency with the credits required to meet minimum entry criteria for our course, so cannot be accepted.

 

Music W300 and Music and Philosophy WV35 We normally require DDM grades in BTEC music courses, and if syllabus is heavily practice – or technology-weighted, we may also ask for a pass in ABRSM Grade 8 Theory Pass the Access to HE Diploma with 45 credits at level 3 of which 30 credits must be at Distinction. 12 level 3 credits should normally be from Music and achieved at Distinction. GCSE English at grade C or above is also required, and ABRSM Grade 7 Theory may also be requested

Modern Languages: single, joint and combined honours modern languages courses with beginners’ level entry. See online prospectus or contact the school to find out more about which courses are available

Nursing BSc - B740 Adult/B730 Child/ B767 Mental Health

The Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care (Health Studies) or Health Science should be passed with a minimum of DDM as the final award to include a minimum of 60 academic science credits, plus GCSE English and maths (grade C or above). Other relevant Extended Diplomas may be considered if they include 60 credits out of the possible 120 below:

Pass the Access to Nursing and Midwifery/Science pathway with 45 graded credits at level three with a minimum of 15 credits from science units.  Grades achieved must include a minimum 30 credits at merit or above with at least 15 of these at distinction.  Plus GCSE English and maths (grade C or above).

We no longer accept Functional Skills qualifications in maths and English in lieu of GSCEs.

BSc Nutrition B400/ MNutr Nutrition and Dietetics B401 A science-based Extended Diploma: DDM

Access must be science-based.

For BSc Nutrition B400: Overall pass with Merit in 30 credits of level 3 modules with a high science content, particularly biological science and chemistry.

For MNutr B401: Overall pass with Distinction in 30 credits of level 3 modules with a high science content, particularly biological science and chemistry plus 10 credits achieved at Merit or above.

For both courses the science modules need to be specified as part of the entrance requirements (15 credits in chemistry essential). Please forward to admissions tutor for consideration. GCSE English and maths at grade C or above is also required for both courses.

Pharmacy B230 BTEC Extended Diploma not accepted for direct entry. Applicants are advised to apply for the Science with Foundation Year CGF0/CFG0 course. Science and maths GCSEs must be at grade B or above. Please see the Foundation Science website for further information on the course Not accepted

Politics (all courses) Extended Diploma: DDM-DDD Pass the Access with 45 credits at level 3 to include at least 12 credits at Distinction and 18 at Merit or above. GCSE English at grade C or above is also required
Psychology C800 Must be predicted an overall number of UCAS tariff points equivalent to our minimum A level requirement; plus at least B in maths and English at GCSE. We also prefer BTEC students to have at least one additional A level in a strong subject – please contact the school directly Pass the Access with 30 credits at level 3 at distinction and 9 at merit; plus grade B at GCSE level in maths and, preferentially, also English (even though this may be waived based on strong performance on essay-based components on the Access course). Veterinary Medicine and Science with Preliminary year D104 Extended Diploma: DDD (subjects considered on individual basis); plus 5 grade A GCSEs including biology, chemistry, physics (or double science), English and maths

Access courses: we will consider applicants who have undertaken access courses on an individual basis. 60 credits overall with 45 at level 3, of which 30 credits must be Distinction. Minimum of grades B at GCSE English language and maths

Veterinary Medicine and Science with Gateway year D190 Extended Diploma: DMM (subjects considered on individual basis) plus 5 grade B GCSEs including biology, chemistry, physics (or double science), English and maths

Access courses: we will consider applicants who have undertaken access courses on an individual basis.  60 credits overall with 45 credits at level 3, of which 15 credits must be Distinction. The diploma must include biology and chemistry to level 3. Minimum of grades B maths and English language

Zoology C300 (BSc)/C301 (MSci) BTEC Extended Diploma not accepted for direct entry. Applicants are advised to apply for the Science with Foundation Year CGFO/CFGO course.
