Research Topic:
Governance of Open Source Communities in the Higher Education Sector

Research Details:
Open source software (OSS) solutions are alternatives to the classic build-buy dilemma associated with information technology adoption process in the higher education sector. An OSS community consists of geographically dispersed individuals and organisations that form virtual organisation and collaborate to develop software products under OSS license. The dispersed community, the diversity of collaborators, and the conflicting interests of the members create challenges on selecting the suitable governance mechanism to create and sustain OSS communities. The extant literature focused on governing OSS communities serving horizontal domains, which are infrastructural applications with standard requirements, such as operating systems. The aim of my research is to understand the governance mechanisms practiced on OSS communities serving vertical domains; higher education sector in specific. Such sector-oriented OSS solutions are targeting specific users and designed by specialized developers as their requirements are more complex and require dedicated knowledge. I have conducted a case study on an OSS community serving the higher education sector, to provide empirical evidence on governing vertical OSS communities. Addressing governance issues in vertical communities and understanding their governance practices will assist the higher education sector in sustaining community-driven software solutions.
