Russian Evening Classes

 We are currently offering Levels 1 and 2 in Russian. Please see below for more information about each of the levels on offer.
 

Russian Level 1

This class is aimed at students who have no previous knowledge of the language.

Duration

  • 20 weeks 

Day and Time

  • Thursday 6.30-8.30pm

Term Dates 

Term 1:
Start: week commencing 7 October 2019
End: week commencing 9 December 2019

Term 2:
Start: week commencing 27 January 2020
End: week commencing 30 March 2020

Trent Building, University Park Campus

Costs

Course fees

  • University of Nottingham Students: £260 (paid in two instalments of £130).
  • Staff and Members of the Public: £280 (paid in two instalments of £140).

Exam fees

There is an optional end of year assessment which involves an additional £10 exam fee.

The exam is compulsory for students taking the classes as part of the Nottingham Advantage Award but no charge is made.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 

  • Exchange simple greetings 
  • Introduce themselves and other people 
  • Give personal information about family, job or studies, where they live 
  • Give the same information about other people 
  • Use numbers 1-100, express age, telephone numbers, dates, time, prices 
  • Give information about their interests, likes and dislikes 
  • Shop for food and clothes 
  • Order meals and drinks 
  • Give directions 
  • Use the present tense of regular verbs and a few irregular verbs 
  • Use the past tense 
  • Use possessive pronouns and adjectives 
  • Use Nominative, Accusative, Genitive and Instrumental and Prepositional cases (singular)

Grammatical structures

The grammatical structures covered in Russian Level 1 are: 

  • The Cyrillic alphabet
  • No verb “to be” in the present tense
  • Negation
  • Gender
  • Personal and demonstrative pronouns
  • Present tense “to live”, “to work”
  • Possessive pronouns, possession
  • Preposition Case
  • Adjectives
  • Possessive pronouns
  • Numerals 1-100
  • Plural nouns; basic verbs of motion
  • The verb “to want”
  • Imperative
  • Accusative Case; numerals 100-1000
  • Days of the week; frequency adverbs
  • Months; different ways of expressing likes and dislikes
  • Dative Case
  • Genitive Case

The textbook used is Beginner’s Russian by Rachel Farmer (Hodder & Stoughton Ltd).

If you are confident at using most of the structures, please look at Level 2.

 

Russian Level 2

This class is aimed at students who have completed the Russian level 1 evening class or who have an equivalent amount of previous knowledge.

  • 20 weeks
