We are making some changes to these courses which may affect you. See below for further details.

Medicine at Lincoln with a Foundation Year BMBS (A18L)

September 2024 is the final year the University of Nottingham will offer entry to this course.

Frequently asked questions for offer-holders

Will there be any changes to the course that has been advertised?

As long as you progress to the end of the course without having a break in learning (long enough for you to have to resit or repeat a year), you will study on the course in the form that it has been advertised.

This means that if you successfully progress from your Foundation year as intended, you will transfer onto the 5-year course at Lincoln Medical School in 2025 as expected.

What counts as a break in learning?

Students can have breaks in learning for a variety of reasons. For example, someone may need to take a break from their studies due to ill health or a positive life event such as pregnancy, or there may be a break in learning due to failure to pass an assessment at the required time.

Depending on the circumstances and reasons for the break in learning, a break in learning will require a student to repeat or resit their studies at a determined future point.

What happens if I am not able to complete the Foundation Year as planned in the 2024/25 academic year due to a break in learning?

If you have a break in learning that means that you will need to study the Foundation Year again in the 2025/26 academic year, you will not be able to study the Foundation Year in Lincoln, as the Foundation Year will no longer be running there.

If your break in learning is not due to academic failure and requires you to repeat the Foundation Year, you will need to restart your studies on the Foundation Year course located and delivered in Derby (A108 course) and you will be expected to attend in person.

If your break in learning is due to academic failure, i.e., you have not passed the required exams and you are required to resit some or all of the Foundation Year, you will have the option to resit either ‘in attendance’ or ‘not in attendance’.

If you choose to resit ‘not in attendance’, you will study virtually, using the materials available in our virtual learning environment to guide your revision. If you choose to resit ‘in attendance’, you will be studying on the Foundation Year course in Derby (A108) and will be expected to attend in-person teaching located in Derby, because the Foundation Year course will no longer be running in Lincoln.

Please note, if you choose to resit in attendance, you will have to attend teaching and placements in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire (rather than Lincolnshire), so your cost of living and travel expenses may increase. If you choose to resit not in attendance, you will not be entitled to a maintenance loan.

If you successfully progress, having retaken or repeated the Foundation year, you will continue onto the 5-year BMBS (A100) taught in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.

Please note that we are planning a significant curriculum redesign in 2026 to the A100 course, so if you take a break in learning and have to move to the A100 course, the course you progress onto may look very different to the course that is currently advertised. It may not contain the BMedSci degree component.

If you have a break in learning in later years of the course, you will have to move to the 5-year BMBS (A100 course), which is taught at Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, in order to continue your studies. This is because the University of Nottingham will no longer be admitting students to the 5-Year BMBS (A10L) course taught at Lincoln after 2025.  In doing this, you may have to repeat parts of a year you have previously successfully completed.  There may also be financial consequences (such as increased accommodation and travel expenses) if you have to move to study on the 5-year (A100) BMBS programme taught in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.

Please note that we are planning a significant curriculum redesign in 2026 to the A100 course, so if you take a break in learning and have to move to the A100 course, the course you move to may look very different to the course that is currently advertised. It may not contain the BMedSci degree component.

Why would I not be able to stay in Lincoln if I needed to repeat or resit some of my studies due to a break in learning?

September 2024 is the final year the University of Nottingham will offer entry to the Medicine with a Foundation Year course taught in Lincoln (A18L).

What might be the financial implications of moving my course from Lincolnshire to Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire?

The tuition fees would be the same. The Student Loans Company (SLC) would continue to offer you the same loan terms as it would if you had continued as a University of Nottingham student at Lincoln.

You will, however, need to attend teaching and placements in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire (rather than Lincolnshire), so your cost of living and travel expenses may increase.

Deferred entry for this course is not available.

Why can’t I defer my place?

September 2024 is the final year the University of Nottingham is offering entry to this course, and so there will be no Medicine with a Foundation Year course at Lincoln (A18L) in 2025 to defer entry to.

Frequently asked questions for offer-holders

No, as long as you don't have a break in learning (long enough for you to have to resit or repeat a year), there are no planned changes to the course that has been advertised.

What happens if I have a break in learning in one or more years of study?

If you take a break in learning in the first year of your course, upon your return you will join the 2025 entry cohort. The structure of this course will be the same as is currently advertised.

However, if you have an additional break in learning, you will have to move to the 5-year BMBS (A100 course), which is taught at Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, in order to continue your studies. You may have to repeat parts of a year you have previously successfully completed.  There may also be financial consequences (such as increased accommodation and travel expenses) if you have to study on the 5-year BMBS programme taught in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.

Why would I not be able to stay in Lincoln if I needed to repeat or resit more than one year of my studies due to one or more breaks in learning?

Deferral to 2025 entry is possible, but this will be the last year that the University of Nottingham will be admitting students to the 5-year Medicine course in Lincoln (A10L).

If you subsequently need a break in learning that requires you to resit or retake a year, you will have to move to the 5-year BMBS (A100 course), which is taught at Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, in order to continue your studies. You may have to repeat parts of a year you have previously successfully completed.  There may also be financial consequences (such as increased accommodation and travel expenses) if you have to study on the 5-year BMBS programme taught in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.  As such, we encourage you to think carefully about deferring your place.

Please note that we are planning a significant curriculum redesign in 2026 to the A100 course, so if you take a break in learning and have to move to the A100 course, the course you move to may look very different to the course that is currently advertised.
