The University of Nottingham ACCESS Centre (UNAC) was established in 2001 and is based within Cherry Tree Lodge, University Park at the University of Nottingham.
UNAC is a recognised assessment centre registered with and accredited through DSA-QAG (Disabled Students' Allowances Quality Assurance Group). UNAC is also a member of NNAC (National Network of Assessment Centres). We have a team of Specialist Assessors and offer DSA Assessment of Needs to disabled students, including those with Specific Learning Difficulties/Differences (such as dyslexia or dyspraxia), physical or sensory disabilities, mental health issues or long-term medical conditions.
Assessors work in collaboration with students, University/College support services, funding bodies and equipment and support providers in order to establish a range of appropriate and detailed support recommendations which form the basis of the Assessment of Needs Report. Assessments are provided to those studying in and around Nottingham and the East Midlands, as well as to students from the region who are studying elsewhere within the UK. You do not have to be a University of Nottingham student to access this service.
Our assessment fee is £550, which your funding body covers via your DSA. This covers both your initial assessment and review or updates to your DSA that you may need throughout your studies. We can also review your needs if you move on to further courses of study. However, if you present with an additional diagnosis; move on to PGCE or postgraduate research; have a break of 2 years or more in your studies or if it is more than 5 years since your last DSA assessment, you will be eligible for a funded review of your needs which we can carry out. All reviews must be authorised in writing by the funding body.
We aim to carry out your Needs Assessment within 15 working days of your initial request for an Assessment, although our waiting list is frequently shorter than this. Contact us for information regarding our next available appointment.
If you contact us by email requesting an appointment, please include your contact telephone number(s) and the nature of your disability/specific learning difficulty/differences so we can match you to an appropriate Assessor. Please also email us a copy of the evidence that you sent to your funding body with your DSA application and a copy of the letter that they have forwarded to you agreeing to you going ahead with the assessment.
If you contact us by telephone, or call in to the ACCESS Centre to book your appointment, it would be helpful if you could have the copy of your Funding Body letter to hand.
ACCESS Centre personnel will be available to book appointments and answer student calls and queries Monday - Friday 9.00 a.m. - 5.00 p.m.
Our first Needs Assessment appointment is at 09.30 a.m. and our final appointment of the day is usually at 2.00 p.m., although we may also be able to offer appointments at 3.00 or 3.30 p.m.
