Course overview

If you’re excited by the challenge of understanding the universe through mathematics and abstract thinking, this course is for you. Building on the core principles of the Physics BSc, this programme takes you deeper into the theoretical foundations of modern physics. You’ll study advanced topics such as quantum mechanics, particle physics, cosmology, and new forms of matter with extraordinary properties. Through hands-on research projects, you’ll gain experience in mathematical modelling, computational techniques, and the development of theoretical frameworks. You’ll learn how to formulate and test your own ideas, just like the researchers leading the field. 

This MSci integrated master's programme offers you the chance to study areas of the subject in greater depth, pushing the boundaries of what is known. You’ll further sharpen the skills that employers highly value enabling you to transition to the professional workplace and excel in your chosen career. In this fourth year you'll dedicate half the time to working on a cutting-edge research project with one of our world-class research groups. About modules

Our teaching methods include lectures, tutorials, hands-on laboratory sessions, and workshops for problem-solving and skills development. Collaboration is key in physics, so we incorporate group work to enhance your ability to solve complex problems. Communication skills are also crucial, and we offer flexible ways to develop and assess these skills.

Modules will vary in terms of method and structure of assessment; you are provided with the school’s overall assessment strategy supplemented by specific details for each module.

You will receive a copy of the marking criteria which guides how we will assess your work for each module and element. Your work will be marked promptly, and you will receive feedback. 

Assessments of your skills will be based on a portfolio which allows you to select the work that best demonstrates your capabilities in each year. This will also be valuable to you in applying for summer internships, graduate jobs and further study. 

Your final degree classification will be based on marks gained in your second, third and fourth years of study. 

You must pass each year to progress. This typically means that you will need to achieve marks of at least 40% in each module.

You will typically have 14-18 contact hours per week in years 1 to 3, including a mix of lectures, workshops or problem classes, and laboratory and computing practical sessions. In year one, you will also attend weekly small group tutorials, which become less frequent as you gain independence in later years.

From the start, practical sessions include open-ended tasks designed to develop your investigative skills, preparing you for the project work that forms a major part of years 3 and 4.

In your last year, scheduled contact hours are slightly reduced to allow more time for independent research and project work. However, you will still have regular access to module staff for support as needed.
