Below is a table showing courses which most commonly accept the Access HE Diploma and BTEC qualifications and their entry requirements. These qualifications are the minimum requirements and you may need additional GCSEs or other qualifications. You may also be required to attend an interview.

Pass Access to HE Diploma: to include 45 credits at level 3. Of these a minimum of 24 credits should be achieved at merit or above.

* Please note that for V401 the Access Diploma must include some core science modules.

Architectural Environment Engineering

Electrical and Electronic Engineering (all courses)

Extended Diploma in appropriate engineering subject: DDD including distinction in maths and further maths; plus grade 4 (C) in GCSE maths.

We accept a mix of BTEC and A level qualifications. For example:

If studying a 120 credit Diploma and is offering both Mathematics and Further Mathematics as part of that Diploma, then we require:

BTEC DD including distinctions in Maths and Further Maths plus grade B in A level maths.

If studying only Maths and not Further Maths in their BTEC units, then they must be doing A level Maths. The requirement is:

BTEC DD including distinction in Mathematics plus grade B in A level maths.

Subsidiary Diploma (60 credits): This is counted as equivalent to a science A-level. Applicants must also be offering two A-levels including mathematics. The requirement is: BB in A levels (including Maths) plus distinction in the Subsidiary Diploma.

Pass Access to HE in Engineering or Science with distinction in at least 30 credits at Level 3 to include all mathematics units taken (must include calculus) and merit in at least 10 further credits at Level 3; plus GCSE English grade 4 (C).

Engineering and Physical Sciences Foundation programme
H100

DDM in any BTEC subject plus GCSE Maths at grade 5 (B) or above, English at grade C or above, Physics at grade 5 (B) or above (or Double Science at grade BB or Science and Additional Science at Grade BB).

If applicants don’t meet our GCSE Maths criteria this can be compensated for with Core Maths at grade 4 (C) or with the following BTEC units passed at merit:

  • BTEC Engineering - Unit 28: Further Mathematics for Engineering Technicians
  • BTEC Applied Science - Unit 7: Mathematical Calculations for Science and Unit 8: Using Statistics in Science

We accept a mix of A levels and BTEC qualifications – for example 2 A levels and 2 AS levels and BTEC/A level combinations.

We consider Access courses in any subject but prefer pathways in Engineering or Science (Physics, Maths and Chemistry – this should have maths content rather than Biology). Applicants are invited to an interview before being made an offer.

English courses Considered on an individual basis. Grades required: D*D*D* – DDM. Please contact the School direct. Pass Access to HE Diploma with 45 credits at level 3 of which 30 credits must be at distinction. 15 level 3 credits must be from English modules and 9 of these English credits must be at distinction. Please note: we do accept a combination of BTEC qualifications (equivalent to one A level) and 2 A levels (preferably Biology A level).

Pass Access to HE Diploma: to include 45 credits at level 3 of which 30 must be at distinction and the remaining 15 at merit or above. The diploma must include 24 credits at level 3 in biology (preferably human biology) all achieved at distinction. Plus GCSE English and maths at grade 4 (C) or above.

We do not accept level 2 equivalence for GCSE English and maths. Modules relating to conducting and writing lab reports will not count towards biology credits.

Access courses to higher education prior to 2009 will not have current currency with the credits required to meet minimum entry criteria for our course, so cannot be accepted.

 

Music/ Music and Philosophy

We normally require DDM grades in BTEC music courses, and if syllabus is heavily practice – or technology-weighted, we may also ask for a pass in ABRSM Grade 8 Theory. Pass Access to HE Diploma with 45 credits at level 3 of which 30 credits must be at distinction. 12 level 3 credits should normally be from Music and achieved at distinction. GCSE English at grade 4 (C) or above is also required, and ABRSM Grade 7 Theory may also be requested.

CACHE Diploma: overall grade B; plus an A level at grade B in a science subject; plus GCSE English and maths at grade 4 (C) or above (BTEC science components will be accepted). Key skills will not be accepted.

Pass Access to Nursing and Midwifery/Science pathway with 45 graded credits at level three with a minimum of 15 credits from science units. Grades achieved must include a minimum 30 credits at merit or above with at least 15 of these at distinction. Plus GCSE English and maths grade 4 (C) or above.

We do not accept Functional Skills qualifications in maths and English in lieu of GSCEs.

Nutrition/ Nutrition and Dietetics

A science-based Extended Diploma: DDM.

Access must be science-based.

For BSc Nutrition B400: Overall pass with merit in 30 credits of level 3 modules with a high science content, particularly biological science and chemistry.

For MNutr B401: Overall pass with distinction in 30 credits of level 3 modules with a high science content, particularly biological science and chemistry plus 10 credits achieved at merit or above.

For both courses the science modules need to be specified as part of the entrance requirements (15 credits in chemistry essential). Please forward to admissions tutor for consideration. GCSE English and maths at grade 4 (C) or above is also required for both courses.
