Below is a table showing courses which most commonly accept the Access HE Diploma and BTEC qualifications and their entry requirements. These qualifications are the minimum requirements and you may need additional GCSEs or other qualifications. You may also be required to attend an interview.

When completing your UCAS Application Form please ensure that you list all modules and number of credits for the qualification you are/have studied.

GCSE English at grade 4 (C) or above is also required for all courses.

Or

BTEC Subsidiary Diploma – either maximum of 2 Subsidiary Diplomas at grade D each plus one A level at grade A. Or, one subsidiary Diploma at grade D plus 2 A levels at grade A. One qualification must be in Business. Plus maths GCSE grade 6 (B) and GCSE English grade 5 (B) or higher.

A combination of BTECS with Business element may be considered – please contact the school directly to check requirements. All applicants with a combination of BTEC and A-level qualifications will be individually considered by the Admissions Tutor, and an interview may be required.

We accept BTEC Extended Diploma in Engineering or Social Science subjects. Grades required are D*DD – plus grade A GCSE maths.

For Economics and Econometrics (L140):

BTEC Extended Diploma in Engineering or Social Science subjects. Grades required are D*DD – plus grade A in A level Maths.

Assessed on a case by case basis but will need 45 credits at distinction in Economics based subjects.

Electrical and Electronic Engineering (all courses)

Extended Diploma in appropriate engineering subject: DDD including distinction in maths and further maths.

The requirement for the new RQF National Extended Diploma is as follows:
DDD with Distinctions in each of “Engineering Principles”, “Calculus for Solving Engineering Problems” and “Further Engineering Mathematics”.

We accept a mix of BTEC and A level qualifications. For example:

If studying a 120 credit Diploma and is offering both Mathematics and Further Mathematics as part of that Diploma, then we require:

BTEC DD including distinctions in Maths and Further Maths plus grade A/B in A level maths.

If studying only Maths and not Further Maths in their BTEC units, then they must be doing A level Maths. The requirement is:

BTEC DD including distinction in Mathematics plus grade A/B in A level maths.

Subsidiary Diploma (60 credits): This is counted as equivalent to a science A-level. Applicants must also be offering two A levels including mathematics. The requirement is: AA-BB in A levels (including Maths) plus distinction in the Subsidiary Diploma.

DDM in any BTEC subject plus GCSE Maths at grade 6 (B) and Physics at grade 5 (B)

If applicants don’t meet our GCSE Maths criteria this can be compensated for with Core Maths at grade 4 (C) or with the following BTEC unit passed at Distinction:

  • BTEC Engineering – Further Engineering Mathematics

If applicants don’t meet our GCSE Physics criteria this can be compensated for with:

  • GCSE Double Science at grade BB

We do not accept the BTEC Extended Diploma nor will we accept the Extended Diploma and one A level. If you are studying two A levels and either the BTEC Extended Certificate or the BTEC Subsidiary Certificate you will be considered on a case by case basis. Please contact the school direct.

BTEC Extended Diploma is not accepted on its own. BTEC qualifications are acceptable in lieu of non-mathematics A level requirements, following the standard UCAS points equivalences eg A* in A level mathematics plus DD in a BTEC National Certificate. 

Access to HE Diploma will only be accepted when combined with grade A* at A Level Mathematics. The Access Diploma must include specific maths units needed to be achieved at distinction. Please contact the school directly. GCSE English at grade 4 (C) or above is also required.

We normally require DDD grades in BTEC music courses, and if syllabus is heavily practice – or technology-weighted, we may also ask for a pass in ABRSM Grade 5 Theory. Pass Access to HE Diploma with 45 credits at level 3 of which 30 credits must be at distinction. 12 level 3 credits should normally be from Music and achieved at distinction. GCSE English at grade 4 (C) or above is also required, and ABRSM Grade 7 Theory may also be requested.
