The Future Ready: One-to-One Support Programme is your chance to give time and help shape the future of a current University of Nottingham student.

Why become a mentor?

 By joining this programme, you’ll have the opportunity to: 

  • Guide a student and help them to generate career ideas 
  • Prepare a student for work experience 
  • Share your experience and insight into workplace culture  
  • Boost and build their career confidence to allow them to develop their career path 

Students and mentors are matched based on their personality and motivations, ensuring a meaningful and productive partnership.

  • Good listeners who are keen to help students move forward with their goals  
  • People who can ask insightful or thought-provoking questions  
  • Alumni who are happy to hold students accountable in a non-judgemental manner  
  • Alumni who may be from a similar background or were unclear of their career plans as a student  
  • People who would like to mentor students to gain experience or challenge themselves outside of work to move their own careers forward

Volunteering your time as a mentor in the Future Ready mentoring programme will benefit you as an individual by: 

  • Refining your communication and relationship building skills 

  • Sharing your experience and career journey 

  • Supporting students from underrepresented backgrounds to succeed at University of Nottingham and beyond

 What does the programme involve?

The programme will run from February to June. Mentors will be expected to volunteer roughly 1-2 hours per month throughout the duration of the programme.
 September/October Applications open for mentors to register their interest. Applications close on Sunday 20 October.
Late October/Early November Applicants will be contacted to be informed whether their application is successful.  
12/13 November Alumni ‘getting to know you’ sessions (held on Microsoft Teams). This is an opportunity for you to hear more about the mentoring programme and ask any questions, while also giving us the opportunity to get to know you further.  
 December Selected mentors will receive a personality questionnaire which will be used to match students to mentors.  
 January Mentors will be contacted once a match has been made with a student. Students will then make their initial contact with their assigned mentor.  
 February There will be a mentor training session to attend.  
 March to June Engage in one-to-one online sessions with your mentee.
