What is your background?

I am a PhD researcher from the Resilience Engineering research group specialising in operations research for railway disruption management. With a background in civil engineering, my current work focuses on reliability engineering, simulation, and optimisation modelling.

What is your research about?

My research develops a practical decision-support tool for Network Rail to improve disruption management. The aim is to reduce delays, minimise unnecessary train cancellations, and lower operational and financial impacts. By improving service reliability this work supports broader sustainability goals, encourages the use of greener transport, and supports progress towards Net Zero.

Why did you choose the University of Nottingham?

I chose the University of Nottingham because of its strong reputation in engineering and transport research. I completed my MEng at the Malaysia Campus where I experienced a very supportive academic environment. The close links between the global campuses gave me the opportunity to continue my PhD in the UK. Throughout my studies the collaborative culture and strong industry engagement have helped me grow both technically and professionally. I have also been very fortunate to receive consistent support and guidance from my supervisors and the faculty which has been invaluable to my development as a researcher.

What would you say to aspiring engineers?

To aspiring engineers, engineering is about solving real-world problems that affect everyday life. Emerging technologies such as AI and machine learning are powerful tools that can enhance the way we approach engineering problems. Stay curious, be adaptable, and keep strengthening your critical thinking skills. These qualities will always be essential in engineering.
