British Sign Language Evening Classes

 We are currently offering levels 1-3 in British Sign Language. Please see below for more information on each of the levels on offer.
 

British Sign Language Level 1

This course is for students who have no previous knowledge of British Sign Language. 

Duration

  • 30 weeks 

Day and Time

  • Group A: Tuesday 6.30-8.30pm
  • Group B: Thursday 6.30-8.30pm

Term Dates

  • Term 1:
    Start: week commencing 7 October 2019
    End: week commencing 9 December 2018 (10 weeks).
  • Term 2:
    Start: week commencing 27 January 2020
    End: week commencing 30 March 2020 (10 weeks).
  • Term 3:
    Start: week commencing 4 May 2020
    End: week commencing 6 July 2020 (10 weeks).

Venue 

  • Trent Building, University Park Campus.

Costs

Course fees

  • University of Nottingham Students: £405 (paid in three instalments of £135).
  • Staff and Members of the Public: £435 (paid in three instalments of £145).

Exam fees

There is an optional exam for the Signature British Sign Language qualification which involves an additional £125 exam fee.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

British Sign Language Level 2

This module is designed for students who have completed British Sign Language Level 1.

  • 32 weeks

  • Wednesday 6-8.30pm

  • Tem 1:
    Start: week commencing 7 October 2019
    End: week commencing 9 December 2018 (10 weeks).
  • Term 2:
    Start: week commencing 27 January 2020
    End: week commencing 30 March 2020 (10 weeks).
  • Term 3:
    Start: week commencing 4 May 2020
    End: week commencing 20 July 2020 (12 weeks).

Venue 

  • Trent Building, University Park Campus.

  • Staff and Members of the Public: £570 (paid in three instalments of £190).

There is an optional exam for the Signature British Sign Language qualification which involves an additional £180 exam fee.

British Sign Language Level 3

This module is designed for students who have completed British Sign Language level 2. 

Duration

  • 32 weeks 

Day and Time

  • Monday 6-9pm

Term Dates

  • Term 1:
    Start: week commencing 7 October 2019
    End: week commencing 9 December 2018 (10 weeks).
  • Term 2:
    Start: week commencing 27 January 2020
    End: week commencing 30 March 2020 (10 weeks).
  • Term 3:
    Start: week commencing 4 May 2020
    End: week commencing 27 July 2020 (12 weeks).

Please note there is no class on Monday 25 May 2020 due to the Bank Holiday.

  • University of Nottingham Students: £675 (paid in three instalments of £225).
  • Staff and Members of the Public: £705 (paid in three instalments of £235).

Exam fees

There is an optional exam for the Signature British Sign Language qualification which involves an additional £185 exam fee.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 

  • Understand key features of BSL 
  • Know a range of sign language sentence structures, applying signs and set phrases in varied work or social situations
  • Understand a range of BSL structures, facial expressions, mouth patterns and use of space to express meaning 
  • Understand social interaction 
  • Understand signed communication in a range of familiar work and social situations 
  • Understand a broad range of vocabulary 
  • Understand a range of grammatical forms
