German Evening Classes

We are currently offering Levels 1 to 4 in German. Please see below for more information about each of the levels on offer.
 

German Level 1

This class is aimed at students who have no previous knowledge of the language.

Duration

  • 20 weeks 

Day and Time

  • Group A: Monday 6.30-8.30pm
  • Group B: Tuesday 6.30-8.30pm

Term Dates 

Term 1:
Start: week commencing 7 October 2019
End: week commencing 9 December 2019

Term 2:
Start: week commencing 27 January 2020
End: week commencing 30 March 2020

Costs

Course fees

  • University of Nottingham Students: £260 (paid in two instalments of £130).
  • Staff and Members of the Public: £280 (paid in two instalments of £140).

Exam fees

There is an optional end of year assessment which involves an additional £10 exam fee.

The exam is compulsory for students taking the classes as part of the Nottingham Advantage Award but no charge is made.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 

  • Exchange simple greetings 
  • Introduce themselves and other people 
  • Give personal information about family, job or studies, where they live 
  • Give the same information about other people 
  • Use numbers 1-100, express dates, time, prices 
  • Shop for food 
  • Order meals and drinks 
  • Give directions 
  • Talk about leisure activities and means of transport 
  • Understand the use of cases (for example accusative and dative with prepositions) 
  • Understand present tense and basic past tense
 

German Level 2

This class is aimed at students who have completed the German level 1 evening class or who have an equivalent amount of previous knowledge.

Duration

  • 20 weeks 

Day and Time

  • Group A: Wednesday 6.30-8.30pm
  • Group B: Thursday 6.30-8.30pm

Term 1:
Start: week commencing 7 October 2019
End: week commencing 9 December 2019

Term 2:
Start: week commencing 27 January 2020
End: week commencing 30 March 2020

  • Making comparisons 
  • Understand and use modal verbs 
  • Talk about events / activities in the recent past, in more distant past 
  • Talk about events in the future 
  • More on the cases (nominative, accusative, dative) 
  • Using more complex sentences 

Requirements for German Level 2

  • Conjugation of verbs, including separable verbs (e.g. ich komm-e, du komm-st, ich kaufe ein)
  • Imperative of du and Sie (e.g. Komm!, Kommen Sie!)
  • Word order (especially position of verbs)
  • Accusative case (e.g. Ich habe EINEN Bruder.)
  • Negation (e.g. using kein/e etc.)
  • Possessive pronouns (e.g. mein, dein, sein)
 

German Level 3

This class is aimed at students who have completed the German level 2 evening class or who have an equivalent amount of previous knowledge.

  • Discuss holidays and events in the past

  • Talk about daily life and routines

  • Talk about eating habits and watching TV

  • Give information about everyday life in Germany (houses and furniture, renting)

  • Give information about cultural life in Germany
  • Use adjective endings with more confidence

  • Use reflexive verbs

  • Use a broader range of prepositions (including two-way prepositions)

  • Use verbs with prepositions

  • Use more complex sentences
