Professor Jeremy Hodgen joins national group shaping the new curriculum

The Government recently announced that Professor Jeremy Hodgen has been appointed to the 46-strong team of experts recruited to help write the new national curriculum.

Bringing his expertise in mathematical education and research-informed practice, Professor Hodgen will help design a framework aimed at equipping young people with the knowledge and skills needed for life and work.

He will join the group to strengthen mathematical education in schools following recommendations from the Curriculum and Assessment Review chaired by Professor Becky Francis. Appointments were made by the Government based on their best fit for the role, taking into account subject knowledge and in school leadership.

The Observatory for Mathematical Education’s Director, Professor Andrew Noyes, welcomed the appointment, “We’re delighted that Jeremy has been selected to help write the new curriculum. His wide-ranging knowledge of mathematical education, and his commitment to using research to improve classroom practice, will be invaluable in shaping a national maths curriculum that is rigorous, relevant and grounded in evidence.”

Professor Hodgen has extensive expertise across all aspects of mathematics education and has published widely on mathematics education, teacher education, assessment, international comparisons and standards over time. Notably, Professor Hodgen served on a former Prime Minister’s Expert Advisory Group on Maths to 18 and has recently been appointed a Fellow of the National Academy for Mathematical Sciences.
