Winning gold at the BUCS National Champs this weekend was the perfect ending to a season full of hard work, growth, and unforgettable moments.
Joshua Ford, University of Nottingham Korfball first team captain
The University of Nottingham entered the championships full of confidence after their exploits on the court throughout the year, and began the weekend by finishing top of their initial group. With wins against Oxford (18-5), Reading (24-9), and Manchester (10-9), the #GreenandGold advanced through to the knockout rounds, with a match against Newcastle in the quarter-finals rounding out the team's Saturday exploits. Our Nottingham athletes would deliver one of the performances of the weekend in this fixture, scoring an incredible 39 points on the way to victory and a spot in Sunday's semi-finals.
Here, the momentum would continue as Exeter were comfortably beaten 13-6, booking the team a place in the final. Leeds Beckett would stand in the way of an incredible unbeaten season for our side, but there would be no sign of nerves and one final victory would be achieved by a score line of 15-11 to crown the new BUCS champions - the University of Nottingham.
Team captain Joshua Ford reflected on lifting the trophy as the new university champions and the teams effort this season by saying; "Winning gold at the BUCS National Championships this weekend was the perfect ending to a season full of hard work, growth, and unforgettable moments. I’m immensely proud of everything this team has achieved and captaining this squad has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I couldn’t be more grateful to be surrounded by such wonderful people and I’ve loved every second of it."
Emphasising the team's success, vice-captain Rebecca Hanks won female top goal scorer at the tournament with an incredible 39 goals. Congratulations to everyone involved in our Korfball club's success on the court this year.
