Another BUCS title for Nottingham canoe athletes

Nottingham athletes travelled to Scotland to take on the 2025 BUCS Wild Water Championships for their first competition of the year. The meeting at Grandtully Station Park, took place across the weekend of the 15th and 16th November and saw a mix of Wild River Racing, Slalom Paddle and Canoe Sprint athletes getting together to put their best foot forwards for the Canoe WWR Championships to bring home another BUCS National Title.

The weekend’s competition saw entries in both canoe and kayak, men and women in the sprint and classic disciplines with Nottingham taking home a big win and individual athletes taking home medals from a great weekend on the water.

The Men's Classic K1 event, Nottingham saw Finn Cadell, Dan Johnson, Huw Singleton and Flynn Holt all placing in the top 8th out of over 60 competitors, with the final 3 athletes representing the University of Nottingham placing in the top 20. The Men's Classic C1 finals also saw 5 Nottingham athletes placing in the top 11, with Huw Singleton and William Mayer placing in the top 5.

Our women's athletes also finished with a handful of great results in the Classic events with Mollie Ball finishing 8th in K1, and Beth Gill placing 5th in C1 performing brilliantly against a total of 44 competitors.

Finishing off the BUCS classic categories, all 4 of Nottingham's pairs placed in the top 10 of the Open C2 competition, with Flynn Holt and Huw Singleton taking 4th place.

The University had great success in the sprint categories with the Men's C1 resulting in William Mayer taking first place and a gold medal, with the other three Nottingham athlete also placing in the top 10. The Men's K1 event also finished with 5 Nottingham athletes in the top 12, with Huw Singleton taking second place and a brilliant silver medal. In the Women's categories, Mollie Ball also represented Nottingham in the K1 placing in 12th.

To top off an amazing weekend, Nottingham teams, in the Classic Open event, took home 1st, 3rd and 4th place with our winning team finishing a clear 5 second margin over Nottingham Trent to win gold.

Overall, the University of Nottingham gained a total of 340 points across the events, taking home gold from an amazing weekend in Scotland and taking home 88 BUCS points, further strengthening Nottingham's current status as the best university in the country for canoe events.
