BUCS championship victory for University of Nottingham tennis athlete
University of Nottingham sports scholar Phoenix Weir becomes the 2025 BUCS Individual Singles champion after recently besting a field of top university tennis players. Taking place at Loughborough University from the 21st to 23rd March 2025, the championships also saw further Nottingham entries in the men's and women's draws, with plenty of effort and determination shown by all of our athletes.

In the men's draw of the 2025 BUCS Individual Singles Championships, Nottingham's Phoenix Weir entered as the number one seed and displayed his talent from the start. Taking on challengers from Loughborough and Leeds Beckett in his first three matches, Phoenix would win every set played in emphatic fashion, only dropping 11 games on his way to the semi-final.
At this stage Phoenix would face Liam Hignett from the University of Stirling, a foe that Phoenix and his team mates recently conquered to win the team national title at BUCS Big Wednesday which was also held in the same arena. Despite moving from team match play to singles, the outcome would be the same - a Nottingham victory - with Weir booking his place in the final with a 2-0 (6-3, 6-2) victory.
Now one step from another BUCS gold medal, Phoenix would match-up against the competition's number two seed - Loughborough University's Michael Shaw. In his toughest test of the competition against the home favourite, our Nottingham athlete would lose his first set of the competition and the first set of the final - 2-6. However, not to be deterred, Phoenix roared back with a 6-3 victory in the second set, before outlasting his opponent in an epic final set which went all the way to 11-9. Weir would win two decisive games in a row to separate himself and become the BUCS Men's Singles Champion for 2025.
In the women's competition, Nottingham's Katie Andreini would initially register two comfortable wins before falling to defeat in the quarter final. In the same draw, Katie's team mate Madison Kane would reach the Round of 16 before an agonising defeat in the third set saw her competition come to an end.
Everyone at the University of Nottingham is very proud all of our tennis athletes on their performances at the 2025 BUCS Individual Singles Championships, and would like to extend congratulations to our newly crowned champion - Phoenix Weir.
