Stars of the Olympics, Paralympics and Commonwealth Games were among those lighting up the competition as they battled it out in singles, doubles and Para events for the right to be called National Champion in late March. Among those were University of Nottingham sport scholar and Olympian Tin-Tin Ho, who was aiming to make these championships a landmark occasion.
Medicine student Tin-Tin came into the competition as the reigning Women's Singles champion, and retaining her title proved to be anything but straightforward. Tin-Tin would reach the semi-final stage without dropping a set, but would go 3-2 down in the best of 7 match, putting her at great risk of elimination. However, Tin-Tin showed her experience and nerve by rallying to a 4-3 match victory to book her place in the final. Here, Ho once again became the Women’s Singles champion, but it would take an even greater comeback than her semi-final performance. In the final, Ho would lose the first 3 sets before Tin-Tin's championship pedigree and will to win took over, with the final four games all going the way of the Nottingham student. This effort meant it would be a record-equalling seventh Women's Singles national title for Tin-Tin as she now moves level with Jill Parker in the all-time list.
There would also be success for a Nottingham student in the Women's Doubles as Mari Baldwin and her partner Tianer Yu were victorious in all three of their knockout matches by a score of 3-1. Baldwin and Yu got off to a strong start in the final, winning the first two games before losing a close third. At 8-8 in the fourth game, Baldwin and Yu pulled away by winning key points, taking the final game 11-9 and securing themselves their first Senior national titles.
In the Mixed Doubles competition, University of Nottingham Table Tennis athletes Robert Pelc and Jasmin Wong both reach the semi-finals with their respective partners, whilst Wong paired with Tin-Tin Ho in the Women's Doubles - again falling agonisingly close to the final. However, there would still be a Nottingham student on the podium as sport scholar Anna Green took home the Mixed Doubles crown with a victory in the final alongside her brother!
We would like to congratulate all of our students and coaches on their fantastic performances over a weekend that ended a superb week for the programme, with the University of Nottingham Table Tennis Club winning both the Men's and Women's University National Championship titles at BUCS Big Wednesday.
Alongside the success of our students, the 2025 Mark Bates Ltd National Championships were a fantastic celebration of Table Tennis and it was a pleasure to host the showpiece event on the University of Nottingham campus.
