Multiple Indoor Snowsports Championships gold medals for Nottingham

Nottingham’s Snowsports athletes excelled at the British University Indoor Snowsports Championship (BUISC) at the Milton Keynes Snowdome, with multiple winners and finalists across the two-day event. A number of Nottingham athletes travelled to represent the green and gold, aiming to build on their promising performances at the BUCS Dryslope Championships in November.

Sam Massey, who achieved 4th in the men’s Board Slalom in the BUCS Dryslope Championship in November, finished in 1st place this time around to win men's Board Slalom gold, with Nottingham’s Archie Yorke coming in just behind him to win silver in a fantastic race for the university.

Success continued for Massey and Yorke, as alongside Anton Collett and Ebba Cotton, they came 1st in the Board Duals to add another gold medal to our tally, cementing the championships as one to remember for our athletes. Ebba's collection of medals is also ever expanding having won a gold and a bronze in November.

In the women's Ski Slalom, high level performances were achieved by Els Eaves who finished third and won bronze, Anna Morgan (7th) and Sophie Hughes (10th), whilst in the men’s Ski Freestyle, Rory Tann and Olli Crichard saw themselves reach the final. Stan Chell reached the semi-final in the men’s Board Freestyle, with  Steph Hoyan matching this feat in the women’s Board Freestyle.

Taking to the slopes as teams of five, our Ski Duals team of Darcy Atkinson, Leah Syme, Matt Warbrick, Lily Webster, and Max Umpelby would also register a top eight finish, and the group of Els Eaves, Anna Morgan, Sophie Hughes, Jules Martin, and Edu Serra-Scott finished in the top 16.

For many of our athletes, this was their last BUCS competition representing the university as they will be graduating this year. Nevertheless, the teams will be training throughout the rest of the year in preparation for next year’s competitions.

Reflecting on the event, Race Captain Els Eaves commented “I am so proud of the race team - all of their hard work over the year has paid off and they have been able to show off the best versions of themselves on the BUCS stage.” The sentiment was echoed by Freestyle Captain Rory Tann who commented “I’m incredibly proud of our freestylers for their amazing performance at BUISC - they pushed themselves to the max, and I couldn’t have asked for more”.

Everyone at the University of Nottingham would like to congratulate our athletes on their performances at BUISC. You can find out more about the event here: https://www.bucs.org.uk/events-page/snowsports-indoor-championships-2024-1.html and https://gbski.com/competition.php?ID=1715.

I am so proud of the race team as all of their hard work over the year has paid off and they have been able to show off the best version of themselves on the BUCS stage.
