Nottingham students power to BUCS success

The 2025 BUCS (British University & Colleges Sport) Powerlifting Championships took place at Brunel University in Uxbridge last month, and the University of Nottingham returned from the competition as the number one ranked university in the UK after a host of fantastic performances from our students.

We put forward the best team that we could have on the day, and the outcome was very successful!

James West, University of Nottingham Powerlifting Club President

Twenty-eight competitors from the University of Nottingham Powerlifting Club travelled to compete at the 2025 BUCS Powerlifting Championships, representing the most athletes to have competed for the university at the competition. The travelling green and gold contingent consisted of both male and female representatives who entered the championships in differing weight classes, and competed across the weekend of the 18th to the 20th April.

Kerry Wood delivered magnificent performances to secure first place and a BUCS gold in the women's 84kg category, whilst Nottingham's Mia Wannop and Laura Holland also landed on the podium. Wannop took second place in the women's 52kg competition, earning a superb silver, whilst Holland claimed third and bronze in the women's 63kg discipline.

There was also a handful of medals in the men's competitions as club president James West secured silver in the men's 93kg, with team mates Daniel Rajis and William Ndibe also both winning brilliant silver medals in the men's 105kg and men's 120kg competitions respectively. Nottingham's Henry Goldstraw would round out the university's individual medals as he claimed bronze in the men's 105kg.

All of these elite level performances not only resulted in not only individual acclaim, but outstanding success for the team as a whole, as the University of Nottingham topped the table in both the men's and women's team standings! Our group of male lifters earned 59 points, taking home the team title by 8 points, whilst our women's team won 46 points to top the women's team results and secure both titles for the university. These results clearly outline the University of Nottingham as the number one university in the UK for powerlifting.

Club president James West reflected that; "We put forward the best team that we could have on the day, and the outcome was very successful. Many of our Nottingham lifters have now been invited to Worlds and totals were exceeded to all. I would like to wish the best of luck to Miles Selelo for his presidency next year.”

This success highlights the fantastic depth of talent that is on show within the University of Nottingham Powerlifting Club, and we would like to congratulate every athlete involved on their achievements at the 2025 BUCS Championships.
