Softball side claims second consecutive national title for Nottingham

The University of Nottingham Softball Club travelled to the National Baseball and Softball Complex at Farnham Park in Surrey on the weekend of the 10th and the 11th May, and were aiming to successfully defend their BUCS (British Universities & Colleges Sport) national title from 2024.

University of Nottingham - 2025 BUCS Softball National Champions

It’s really impressive to me how the team came together to support each other and also the other competing universities across the weekend.

Liam Deegan, University of Nottingham Softball Captain

Our softball club's first team - the Nottingham Arrows - entered the competition as the reigning champions, and delivered impressive performances across the weekend of action against university teams from around the country.

The side, which is comprised of both male and female athletes, took to the mound in a number of matches and would lose only one fixture by a narrow margin. This resulted in the side making a succesful march to the semi-final where they would face the University of Reading for a place in a third national final.

Showing no signs of nerves, the #GreenandGold of the Arrows claimed an emphatic 18-9 victory to book a spot in the showpiece fixture of the weekend against Durham University, with the 2025 National Championship on the line.

Despite anticipating a close encounter, the University of Nottingham started the final extremely well and took a commanding lead that set the team up to deliver a 17-0 victory in the final, mercying the opposition after just 5 innings. The finals Most Valuable Players were Andrew Greener for impressive pitching to keep the offence in check, and Ella Porter for starting Nottingham's offensive rally and hitting almost nothing but triples.

The teams overall performances ensured that Nottingham still stands atop the UK university softball mountain, and secured the University of Nottingham as back-to-back National Champions.

Liam Deegan, team captain, reflected on the achievement by saying "The University of Nottingham Arrows dominated the 2025 BUCS Softball Nationals, securing back-to-back titles and mercying the final. It’s really impressive to me how the team came together to support each other and also the other competing universities across the weekend."

Congratulations to everyone involved in this fantastic success, and look forward to the side aiming to become the first team to defend the title three times in a row in 2026.
