Success on the world and national stage for Nottingham's triathlon athletes

Nottingham triathletes had a busy end to the month of June as they competed at the 2025 BUCS Standard Distance Championships, whilst Oliver Conway raced on the international stage at the Saidia World Cup. Both events saw monumental efforts by the #GreenandGold, and also produced some fantastic results.

Competing under the scorching Moroccan sun on the 29th June, University of Nottingham student Oliver Conway defied expectations to claim his first-ever World Triathlon Cup win at the Saidia World Cup, outsprinting seasoned veterans to claim the title.

After bridging up to the front group with some smart racing on the bike, Oliver controlled his efforts by playing the long game over the 10km, and trusting in his strategy. In an exciting finish saw, Conway picked off the other athletes who would join join him on the podium to take the lead in the final metres of the run leg, and claim his maiden World win. Reflecting on the conditions of his race, Oliver said "I don't think I've ever been that hot on a bike in my life!"

Just one week earlier on the 21st June, the University of Nottingham saw a host of triathletes head to Whitlingham Country Park in Norwich for the 2025 BUCS (British Universities & Colleges Sport) Standard Distance Championships. Competing against the very best athletes across the UK university sport landscape, Nottingham took to the podium once again.

In the women's race, across the 1.5km swim, 40km bike ride, and 10km run, University of Nottingham Triathlon Club members registered three top ten finishes as Imogen Sutton narrowly missed out on an individual medal finishing fourth, whilst Amy Leonard and Maddie Hughes finished 8th and 9th respectively. These three finishes ensured that Nottingham would be the only university with three student-athletes in the top-ten, and ensured that the women's team gold medal was won by the #GreenandGold!

Over in the men's competition, the achievements continued to roll in with another clutch of top ten finishes. There would be another close battle for individual bronze as Josh Geary finished in fourth - just seven seconds behind third. Geary's team mate Oliver Hitchcock followed him home in fifth, whilst Nottingham's Edward Joliffe crossed the line for a ninth place finish. These efforts meant that the University of Nottingham would once again take to the podium, this time claiming silver in the men's team event.

We would like to congratulate the University of Nottingham Triathlon Club and everyone involved for their recent successes on both the national and international stage. UoN Tri finish the season with 3 golds, 3 silvers and a bronze medal over 4 events.
