University of Nottingham Table Tennis athletes travelled to Burdur, Turkey to compete at the 2025 European Universities Table Tennis Championships. Taking place from the 11th to the 16th September, our student athletes took on the very best players from universities across the continent in an effort to be crowned European Champions.
Having been crowned National Champions in both the men's and women's BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) competitions this year, performance athletes from the University of Nottingham Table Tennis Club travelled to Turkey to compete in the 2025 EUSA (European University Sports Association) European Championships in the team and individual events. This year’s tournament was the 13th European Universities Table Tennis Championship, bringing together 132 student-athletes from across the continent.
Entering into the men's and women's team events, it would be the women's team of Jiaqi “Annie” Meng, Tin-Tin Ho, Jasmin Wong, Anna Green, and Mari Baldwin who would bring home the first medal of the championships for the University of Nottingham. After topping Group D in the initial phase with wins over the University of Warsaw, the University of Ljubljana, and the Technical University of Munich, the side advanced to the quarter-finals where they would take on the University of Zagreb. A 3-1 victory set-up a semi-final against Paris Descartes Uni, where the #GreenandGold would again be victorious with the 3-0 win securing a place in the final. Awaiting them would be Wroclaw University of Economic, and the two sides displayed incredible skills and effort in a memorable final. Ultimately the University of Nottingham would finish on the wrong side of a very narrow 3-2 score line, still resulting in a magnificent silver medal.
Following the team event came the individuals, with Nottingham athletes competing in both the singles and doubles. All of our women's representatives would advance to the last 16 of the singles competition, with Anna Green, Jiaqi “Annie” Meng, and Tin-Tin Ho reaching the quarter-finals. Ho and Meng would both register 3-0 victories to secure their places in the semi-finals whilst Green narrowly fell short, but the final would be just one step too far for the Nottingham pair, meaning two bronze medals were added to the growing medal haul for our players.
After displaying their prowess in the singles competition, our two singles medallists, Ho and Meng, paired in the women's doubles competition alongside the team of Mari Baldwin and Jasmin Wong. Whilst Baldwin and Wong would fall in the quarter-finals, Tin-Tin and Annie powered through to the final without losing a game, setting up a gold medal contest against the University of Ljubljana. Here, the pair from Slovenia were no match for the University of Nottingham who asserted their dominance to take the title with another three game victory (11-8, 11-8, 11-8), and claim the crown of European Champions!
In the men's competitions, the team of Harrison Docherty, Howard Onweng, Xinliang Sun, and Robert Pelc defeated another UK side in Imperial College London to finish in 11th place after being eliminated in the group stage. Howard Onweng would reach the last 32, whilst the team of Docherty and Pelc advanced to the last 16 in the men's doubles before being defeated.
Reflecting on the championships, University of Nottingham's Head of Table Tennis Kelly Sibley remarked: "I’m incredibly proud of our athletes and what they’ve achieved at this event. From Jiaqi Meng and Tin-Tin Ho’s dominant performance to secure the women’s doubles gold, to the entire women’s team’s effort in earning a well-deserved silver medal and the individual bronze medals for Jiaqi Meng and Tin-Tin in the singles further highlight the depth of talent we have in this squad. On the men’s side, after a tough group stage, the team showed great character by regrouping and delivering some strong performances in the remaining group stages and play off matches where we finished with a strong win over Imperial College London. I want to sincerely thank every player for their hard work and dedication and commitment to the club, and also extend my gratitude to the University of Nottingham for its continued support of our table tennis programme. These results are a reflection of the high standards we set, and I’m excited for what’s to come over the next coming season."
Everyone at the University of Nottingham congratulates our table tennis athletes on their magnificent efforts at the 2025 European University Championships, with four fantastic medals - one gold, one silver, and two bronze - and a European crown a brilliant reward for the clubs performances. The club now looks ahead to another promising campaign in BUCS competition, with the BUCS Individual Championships taking place at our David Ross Sports Village at the end of November.
