University of Nottingham secures hosting rights for major University squash and table tennis championships

The University of Nottingham has secured hosting rights for two major national University championships successfully bringing them back to the city for the next two years. Nottingham has been selected by British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) to host both their Table Tennis and Squash Individual Championships in November 2025 and 2026.

Squash players compete at David Ross

The prestigious events will take place alongside each other over three days at the world-class facilities of David Ross Sports Village, alongside partner venue Nottingham Squash and Rackets Club.

The two events will bring together over 600 student athletes from across the UK and serves as a competitive platform for both novice and elite players. Many past participants have gone on to compete at the highest levels, including World University competitions, professional circuits, Commonwealth Games and Olympics.

The university has a strong track record of hosting major sporting events, recently welcoming the World Touch Rugby Championships, and in supporting organisations to deliver on their sustainability commitments. Bespoke lighting, extensive sustainable transport options, recycling schemes and digital solutions have all been employed to reduce the footprint of recent competitions.

BUCS is delighted to be returning to the University of Nottingham for the BUCS Squash Individual Championships and the BUCS Table Tennis Individual Championships 2025-26 and 2026-27. After a competitive bidding process, we are thrilled to continue our work with the University of Nottingham and are looking forward to exploring opportunities together to take both events from strength to strength in the coming years.

BUCS Table Tennis lead

Last year, both events were hosted at the University of Nottingham on the same weekend as part of BUCS’ drive to improve events sustainability. Nottingham jumped onboard with the idea, providing iPads to introduce digital scoring for the first time at Squash, introduce a bespoke lighting scheme to reduce energy consumption at Table Tennis and provided screens to share results which removed the need for paper results boards.

In November, the University of Nottingham’s squash programme will be hoping to add to its illustrious history with more national titles on home soil. Notable alumni include former British and European No.1 Peter Marshall, Commonwealth medallist Emma Beddoes, two-time BUCS champion Hana Ramadan, and current Commonwealth Champion Gina Kennedy.

On the Table Tennis court, the Green and Gold will be looking to continue their domination of the sport at university level. University of Nottingham have now held the Men’s and Women’s team titles for 10 and 7 years respectively and will be looking for a repeat of the 2024 individual championships where they took gold in the Men’s and Women’s Singles, Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles.

Bringing the BUCS Individual Championships to Nottingham for the next two years is a huge achievement for the university. It highlights the exceptional sporting environment we provide and offers our students a unique chance to compete at the highest level of university squash and table tennis right here at home. This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase our incredible facilities for squash and table tennis and cement Nottingham’s reputation as a powerhouse for elite racket sports.
