Engineers are among the busiest students on campus. On average, you will have around 20 to 22 contact hours a week in years one and two. Combined with coursework and self-study, you are likely to spend over 40 hours a week on your studies.

Our courses provide the opportunity to specialise through a choice of subject modules and practical work.

Engineering Practice and Project

This module provides a comprehensive introduction to engineering design and project delivery through both theoretical understanding and practical application. You will learn fundamental design principles, machine elements selection and basic manufacturing skills. You will also learn methods to develop and communicate designs through CAE to a wide range of audiences. Through group and individual practical project work, you will be introduced to project planning techniques including scheduling, risk assessment, resource allocation and engineering documentation.

Materials and Manufacturing

This module introduces you to the properties of materials, selected failure mechanisms and core manufacturing methods used in engineering applications. This understanding of both materials and the manufacturing techniques used to process these materials is essential to produce effective and commercially viable products and to enable engineering components to operate as required.

Mathematics and Programming

This module delivers mathematics teaching alongside core programming principles. You will develop a strong understanding of mathematics required for a range of engineering problems, including solving first- and second-order differential equations, the algebra of complex numbers, and solving systems of equations with matrix techniques and vectors. You will also be introduced to writing and understanding computer programs, including the use of variables and data types, loops, functions and arrays, and data plotting and simple computer graphics.

Professional Practice

An introduction to a variety of models and exemplars to support you in understanding and articulating your personal learning style and negotiation of the journey from new undergraduate to BSc Accountancy graduand.

This is the final module undertaken in the degree. It emphasises the employability skills and professional development aspects of the programme and also requires you to reflect upon the integrated placement segments of the programme.

Statics and Dynamics

This module introduces you to the analysis of mechanical systems in statics and dynamics contexts. Through a structured approach, you will develop core analytical skills by exploring topics including force equilibrium, stress and strain analysis, kinematics, conservation laws and mechanical drive systems. The emphasis is placed on developing skills to apply these concepts to simplified engineering scenarios, providing a solid foundation for further study.

Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics 1

This module covers the fundamental concepts and principles of thermofluids and their applications to engineering problems. You will develop an understanding of topics including fundamental fluid properties and the equation of state, first and second laws of thermodynamics and heat engine analysis, and principles in fluid mechanics, continuity, Euler equation, turbulence and Bernoulli equation.

Design, Manufacture and Project

This module builds upon fundamental design principles, advancing technical capabilities while incorporating systems thinking and professional practice. You will develop comprehensive design and project management skills through both individual and team-based activities. The content covers areas including advanced design methodology and problem definition, CAD modelling, effective technical communication, manufacturing processes and prototype development, project planning and project management, team management methods including team leadership and team working, and design verification and validation approaches.

Computation and Simulation

This module extends programming knowledge into computational methods applicable across engineering disciples. You will develop both programming and analysis capabilities. The content covers advanced programming for engineering analysis, core numerical methods, fundamentals of finite element analysis, principles for the design of simulations and result interpretation and validation.

Dynamics and Vibration

Building on the foundations of first year dynamics, this module introduces concepts of rigid body dynamics and vibration analysis. You will develop the ability to model and analyse mechanical linkages and systems of rigid bodies, and to evaluate the vibration response of a range of mechanical systems. The module is delivered through a combination of theory and case studies, helping you connect analytical techniques with practical applications.

Electromechanical Systems

This module introduces electromechanical systems, combining theoretical understanding with practical application. You will develop both analytical and implementation skills through hands-on projects. The content covers areas including fundamentals of electric motors and actuators, power electronics principles, system stability and performance, practical electromechanical integration and control system fundamentals.

Materials, Manufacturing and Sustainability

This module addresses engineering materials and their application in sustainable design practice. You will develop an integrated understanding of material properties, processing and through-life considerations. The content covers areas including design requirements and constraints, material performance evaluation, sustainable manufacturing considerations and selection methods for sustainable design.

Mechanics of Solids

This module builds on the foundations of first year statics to develop a more advanced understanding of how structural components behave under load. You will extend your knowledge of stress and strain to more complex situations, explore elastic and plastic behaviour, examine various modes of failure and stability and learn how strain-energy methods can be used to determine structural deflections. The module develops proficiency in the analytical tools, which will form the basis for their use in design and advanced applications in subsequent modules and professional engineering practice.

Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics 2

This module extends fundamental thermofluid concepts to address practical engineering applications. You will develop capabilities in both theoretical analysis and experimental investigation through the study of content including advanced fluid mechanics and flow analysis, heat transfer and thermodynamics of cycles and systems.

Engineering in Industry

This module explores engineering management, focusing on the integration of key business principles with practical application. You’ll develop expertise in financial modelling, project management, quality systems, and risk mitigation. Key topics include:

systems thinking
operational optimisation
strategic decision-making.

By combining theoretical insights with real-world methodologies, this module equips you with the skills to manage engineering projects and drive organisational success.

Major Individual Project

This module is a significant part of the year and provides you with the opportunity to scope, plan, manage, execute and report an individual engineering project. You will work with a project supervisor who will provide guidance and support. Module taught content supports the scoping and planning stage of the project including the development of project context and background, the development of an aim and objectives for the work proposed, project methodology, project planning and associated Gantt chart, and project risk assessment. There will be assessed submissions at appropriate reporting stages through the project. This includes a final project deliverable document at the end of the project, which encapsulates the significant project content.

Each project will be different but will contain elements from one or more of these areas: experimental, computational, analytical, design and manufacture. Taken by students studying Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering and Mechanical Engineering with Manufacturing, the topic of the project will be aligned with the orientation of the degree course.

Professional Portfolio

This module will equip you with the skills you need to work as a professional engineer by advancing and documenting your professional development. It will enable you to demonstrate professional maturity through the synthesis and critical evaluation of engineering experiences. The comprehensive portfolio will include competency evaluation, critical reflection, leadership principles and ethical principles and practice, including sustainability and EDI.

Engineering Sustainability

This module builds upon the sustainability content taught in earlier years to cover the key environmental and sustainability issues of relevance to energy supply and use, materials consumption and manufacture. You will understand the drivers for sustainability, including patterns of energy use, material consumption, waste generation and associated environmental impacts in the UK and globally. Content will introduce techniques for a systems level approach to evaluating the circular economy and efficient materials use, energy use in the context of mechanical and manufacturing engineering systems and life cycle assessment of engineering activities.

Advanced Dynamics and Vibration

This module covers advanced concepts and analytical methods used to analyse the dynamics and vibration of mechanical systems. Topics covered include:

Lagrange’s Equation
linearisation of equations of motion
3D Rigid Body Dynamics in moving (translating and rotating) reference frames
dynamics and stability of rotating machinery
vibration response of complex structures and machines

A number of engineering case studies are presented, including robotics manipulators, gyroscopic sensors, shaft whirl, shock response spectra, vibration absorbers, flight dynamics, and vibration of aerostructures. Skills in modelling and simulation with reference to MATLAB/Simulink are developed.

Computer Aided Engineering

In this advanced module, you will build on your experience of computer-aided design (CAD) modelling and analysis techniques.

You will complete weekly exercises while under the support of an experienced team of computer-aided engineering (CAE) users. This approach will allow you to work at your own pace and receive targeted individual support. You will cover solid and surface modelling, rendering, finite element analysis, design studies and optimisation.

This module will provide you with some advanced practical CAE skills, particularly for use in project work and industry.

Computer Engineering and Mechatronics

This module builds on experience in programming and knowledge of electrical systems while introducing new elements of computer hardware and software engineering, with particular application to mechatronics.  The module will cover topics including system design; programming languages and compilers; sensors and actuators; real time computing and the programming of microprocessors.

Fibre Reinforced Composite Manufacturing

An introductory module on the design, manufacture and performance of fibre-reinforced composite materials.

Constituent materials including fibres, resins and additives are described. Processing techniques and the relationships between process and design are highlighted. Design methodologies and computer-aided engineering techniques are demonstrated for component design. Case studies from a variety of industries including automotive and aerospace are presented.

Materials for Low Carbon Transport

An introductory module to the specialist area of materials for low carbon transport.

Overview of policy, regulation and materials requirements for low-carbon transport Composites
Emerging propulsion materials and systems (fuel cells, rechargeable batteries, supercapacitors, superconductors) for road vehicles, trains and aircrafts.
Advanced metal and alloys (steel, titanium alloys, aluminium alloys, magnesium alloys and superalloys) for transport applications.
Advanced composites including carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) and glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) for transport applications.
Ceramic thermal barrier coatings for aircraft gas turbine engines

Thermal Management of Power Systems

In this advanced module, you will cover heat transfer, thermal power systems and advanced fluid mechanics.

Heat transfer:

Conduction heat transfer – thermal conductivity, thermal resistance networks, and analytical and numerical solutions for one- and two-dimensional steady-state conduction and for one-dimensional transient and unsteady conduction

Convection heat transfer – general concepts and phenomena, velocity and thermal boundary layers, Reynolds analogy, use of experimental correlations for internal and external flows, and enhancement techniques for convective heat transfer

Introduction to boiling and condensation heat transfer

Radiation heat transfer – black body emission, emissivity, absorptivity, transmissivity, Kirchhoff's law, black body radiation heat transfer, view factors, grey body radiation exchange, and radiation networks

Year four

The fourth year of this course is spent in industry. You will receive support in applying for a year-long placement with an appropriate company. During the placement you will significantly enhance your engineering knowledge and skills. You will have regular meetings with your tutor throughout the year and will remain fully registered with the university.

Subject to you meeting the relevant requirements, this year will be spent in industry.

The placement year opportunity enables you to take what you've learned and apply it to real projects in a professional working environment. You will be supported by a placement tutor in securing a position and they will keep in touch during the year to see how you are getting on. The placement year can provide you with a source of income and can even lead to a job offer before you've graduated.

Engineering Team Challenge

This module centres on a substantial team design project, emphasising communication, team working, technical delivery and professional practice. You will develop integrated capabilities across design, manufacture and management. The content covers areas including agile design methodologies, systems engineering principles, prototype development processes, sustainable design practices and team working approaches. The module will develop engineering communication skills including how to record key project decisions professionally. Continuous reflection and performance evaluation combined with the demonstration of strong communication, collaboration and leadership abilities will ensure you are well-prepared for your future career.

Future Technologies Review

This module develops your abilities to critically review and analyse complex engineering challenges in the areas of emerging and near-future technologies and formulate evidence-based solutions. Your skills will be developed using appropriate research strategies, evaluating diverse information sources, selecting analytical techniques and defending technical recommendations. By progressing from collaborative investigation to individual solution development, the module fosters both teamwork and independent critical thinking. It aims to prepare you for professional roles requiring analytical rigor and strategic decision-making in engineering contexts.

Advanced Powertrain Engineering

An advanced module which builds on the students knowledge of thermo-fluids as applied to a range of advanced powertrain systems.

Aerodynamics

This module aims to develop your understanding and application skills of basic concepts and fundamental knowledge in fluid mechanics in aerospace engineering. You will study a range of topics: Applied aerodynamics fundamentals and several relevant theories.

Automotive Vehicle Dynamics

Computational Fluid Dynamics

In this module you’ll develop an advanced understanding of fluid mechanics. You’ll use computational methods in fluid mechanics to further understand how techniques are applied to real fluid engineering problems. For example, you’ll study fluid/structure interactions, air flow, channel flow and water wave propagation. You’ll spend between two and four hours in lectures and two hours in computing sessions each week.

Digital Manufacturing

The module will introduce the relevant background and fundamental concepts regarding the integration of different Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in modern manufacturing systems. Focus will be placed on understanding topics such as cyber-physical systems, adaptive and autonomous manufacturing, digitalisation, data analytics and emerging business models through a series of relevant case studies.

Finite Element Analysis

This is an introductory module on finite element analysis, covering areas including derivation of finite element equations using energy considerations; linear and quadratic elements; introduction to thermal problems; introduction to non-linear problems.

Turbulence and Turbulent Flows

This is an advanced module in fluid mechanics applicable to a wide range of engineering disciplines. You will develop understanding and application skills of basic concepts and fundamental knowledge in turbulence and turbulent flows in engineering.

Manufacturing and Engineering with Polymers

Contextual offers

We make contextual offers to students who may have experienced barriers that have restricted progress at school or college. To qualify for a contextual offer, you must have Home/UK fee status and meet specific criteria – check if you’re eligible.

Foundation progression options

An Engineering and Physical Sciences foundation year is available for those who are not taking the required subjects.

Year in industry

On this course you will spend a year (typically your penultimate year) working in industry gaining first-hand experience of the exciting challenges faced by engineers and refining your professional skills.

While it is the student’s responsibility to find and secure a year in industry host, the Faculty of Engineering placements team will support you throughout this process.

Please note:

In order to undertake an integrated year in industry, you will have to achieve the relevant academic requirements as set by the university and meet any requirements specified by the industry host. There is no guarantee that you will be able to undertake an integrated year in industry as part of your course.

If you are studying a course with an integrated year in industry and you do not secure an integrated year in industry opportunity, you will be transferred to the version of the course without an integrated year in industry. You can choose to transfer to a non-industrial year course if you decide not to take up a placement opportunity. In either case this will be reflected in the title of your degree when you graduate.

Other placements

In addition to an industrial placement year you can seek summer industrial placements in the other years of the course.

It is not possible to study abroad as part of this course because of the industrial placement year.

2026/27 (UK undergraduate students)

This is the UK undergraduate tuition fee for the academic year 25/26. It may increase for the academic year 26/27 and we will update our information once we have received confirmation of the fee from the UK Government.

Additional costs

All students will need at least one device to approve security access requests via Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). We also recommend students have a suitable laptop to work both on and off-campus. For more information, please check the equipment advice.

As a student on this course, you should factor some additional costs into your budget, alongside your tuition fees and living expenses:

Books - You can access all the essential course books through our libraries and there is usually no need to purchase your own copies. Should you wish to do so, these vary in cost but would be around £30 to £80 per book depending upon whether you buy new or pre-owned, paper or electronic.
Printing – There is little need to print as coursework is submitted online and teaching materials provided electronically. If you do wish to print, black and white printing costs 4p per side.
Trips – The department covers the travel cost of compulsory field trips.
PPE – This course does not require PPE items to be bought. Workshop PPE is provided to you in the first year for the duration of your course. Any other essential requirements are met with no cost involved.
Summer work placement - If you do a work placement, any costs associated with travel or accommodation will need to be factored in as they are not covered by your fees.
Industrial year - If you do an industrial placement any costs associated with your year, including travel or accommodation will need to be factored in as they are not covered by your fees.
Year abroad - If you do a study abroad year, you will need to consider the travel and living costs for the country you choose. This could include visa costs and medical insurance.
Design materials – Materials for use in design projects are supplied.
PC device – Although there are PCs available for your use on campus, you will need to purchase your own device. Read more about our recommended specifications.
Calculator - While the calculator you used for your former study is usually sufficient some students will choose to purchase a new calculator which will cost around £10.

For presessional English or one-year foundation courses, you must take IELTS for UKVI to meet visa regulations.

If you need support to meet the required level, you may be able to attend a Presessional English for Academic Purposes (PEAP) course. Our Centre for English Language Education is accredited by the British Council for the teaching of English in the UK.

If you successfully complete your presessional course to the required level, you can then progress to your degree course. This means that you won't need to retake IELTS or equivalent.

International students must have valid UK immigration permissions for any courses or study period where teaching takes place in the UK. Student route visas can be issued for eligible students studying full-time courses. The University of Nottingham does not sponsor a student visa for students studying part-time courses. Additional costs

As a student on this course, you should factor some additional costs into your budget, alongside your tuition fees and living expenses:

Books - You can access all the essential course books through our libraries and there is usually no need to purchase your own copies. Should you wish to do so, these vary in cost but would be around £30 to £80 per book depending upon whether you buy new or pre-owned, paper or electronic.
Printing – There is little need to print as coursework is submitted online and teaching materials provided electronically. If you do wish to print, black and white printing costs 4p per side.
Trips – The department covers the travel cost of compulsory field trips.
PPE – This course does not require PPE items to be bought. Workshop PPE is provided to you in the first year for the duration of your course. Any other essential requirements are met with no cost involved.
Summer work placement - If you do a work placement, any costs associated with travel or accommodation will need to be factored in as they are not covered by your fees.
Industrial year - If you do an industrial placement any costs associated with your year, including travel or accommodation will need to be factored in as they are not covered by your fees.
Year abroad - If you do a study abroad year, you will need to consider the travel and living costs for the country you choose. This could include visa costs and medical insurance.
Design materials – Materials for use in design projects are supplied.
PC device – Although there are PCs available for your use on campus, you will need to purchase your own device. Read more about our recommended specifications.
Calculator - While the calculator you used for your former study is usually sufficient some students will choose to purchase a new calculator which will cost around £10.

There may also be costs issued by the university for replacement student ID cards, additional transcripts or certification letters, reassessments and library fines.

92.6% of mechanical, materials and manufacturing engineering undergraduates secured graduate level employment or further study within 15 months of graduation. The average annual starting salary for these graduates was £32,726 (HESA Graduate Outcomes 2021/22-2022/23).
