Solar energy for Sutton Bonington
A 1000m2 solar array on the roof of the School of Veterinary Medicine and Science building is the latest addition to the University’s portfolio of renewable energy installations. At over twice the generating capacity of the array on the roof of Derby Hall, the Vet School array is expected to generate over 100,000kWh of solar electricity per year.
Other campus buildings generating solar electricity include Business School North, Dearing Building, Aerospace Technology Centre, Environmental Education Centre and Lincoln Hall.
Renewable technologies used elsewhere on campus include:
- Solar water heating – in Sherwood Hall and Si Yuan Centre
- Air source heat pumps (extracting heat from the air to heat buildings) – Highfield House and Institute of Mental Health
- Ground source heat pumps (extracting heat from the ground to heat buildings) – Aerospace Technology Centre, Engineering Science Learning Centre, Humanities, Mathematics and Si Yuan Centre
- Lake source heat pumps (extracting heat from Jubilee campus lake to heat buildings) – Amenities Building, Sir Colin Campbell Building and YANG Fujia Building
- Wood pellet-fired boilers – in Bioenergy Building and Nottingham Geospatial Building
Together these installations produced around 450,000kWh of renewable energy in 2013/14, saving around 150 tonnes of carbon dioxide and generating approximately £55,000 revenue through the Government’s Renewable Heat Incentive and Feed-in Tariff schemes.
