In this four-year MEng Chemical Engineering with Environmental Engineering course, you’ll study both chemical and environmental engineering to design sustainable processes that address challenges like waste, pollution, and water management.

Our course is one of the few in the UK to offer environmental as well as chemical engineering within a process engineering department. With a strong focus on industry relevance, you’ll build core design skills and apply them across sectors including food, pharmaceuticals, oil and gas, and renewable energy.

Fully accredited by IChemE (Institution of Chemical Engineers) and IOM3 (Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining), the course delivers some of the UK’s strongest graduate outcomes, with excellent employment rates and competitive starting salaries.

Contact time and study hours

On average, you will typically have around 20 to 25 contact hours per week, typically consisting of:

18 hours of lectures and seminars
four hours of design workshops
four hours of supervised lab practicals
one hour per week of one-to-one tutorials

The above will vary as you progress through your degree to allow more independent design projects.

You will also continue your learning independently through a combination of coursework and self-study. Your independent learning will be supported by a range of excellent facilities, including the library, Moodle and our engineering and computer laboratories.

Fundamentals of Engineering Design

Combine theory with practice as you learn the fundamentals of design and the design tools most commonly used by engineers in industry. You’ll develop a thorough understanding of core concepts, including process flow diagrams (PFDs), material and energy balances, and equipment selection. Group projects will focus on solving real-world engineering challenges, emphasising sustainability, economic considerations and safety standards. You’ll also gain technical competence with hands-on CAD software training for General Arrangements (GAs) and Piping and Instrumentation (P&IDs) drawings.

By the end of the module, you'll have built foundational skills in process engineering design methodologies and teamwork, preparing you for more advanced design studies in future modules.

Fluid Mechanics

This module covers the essential fluid mechanics needed by engineers to design tanks, vessels, piping systems and pumps. You’ll revisit important aspects of A level physics alongside an introduction to engineering materials used by chemical and environmental engineers in relevant process industries, giving you an introduction to the fundamentals of fluid mechanics, including:

physical properties of fluids
fluid statics
elementary fluid dynamics
viscous flow in pipes

This will then provide a basis for later modules on heat and mass transfer in fluids.

Chemistry for Engineers

Gain the skills you need for further study of Chemical and Environmental Engineering. In this module, you’ll gain the practical knowledge needed in a modern industrial context, with a working knowledge of basic chemical principles and practice.

You’ll learn how to apply appropriate quantitative science and engineering tools to the analysis, evaluation and synthesis of engineering problems, with considerations of sustainability, resource management and green chemical and engineering principles.

Process Engineering Principles

The module aims to provide an understanding of the fundamentals of material and energy balances that underpin process engineering. Topics include:

once-through and recycle systems
flowsheets for continuous processes
batch processes
steady and unsteady state operation
reacting and non-reacting systems
energy balances
combustion calculations
heat balances in chemical and physical systems
enthalpy/composition diagrams

After you master the basics, you’ll then focus on specific examples of the principals of physical separation processes, including:

basic separation principles
single and multiple effect evaporation
vapor recompression integrated with evaporator, cascade and counter-current leaching process
stagewise and continuous liquid-liquid extraction process

Throughout the module, you’ll also explore principles of process operation, design concepts and sizing of process equipment.

Chemical Engineering Mathematics

Gain the mathematical foundation essential for chemical and environmental engineering. You will consolidate skills in basic algebra, single-variable calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, statistics and numerical methods, drawing on real examples directly related to chemical and environmental engineering to show how mathematics supports analysis and design. A key feature of the module is using Python programming to solve problems, combining computational skills with analytical methods.

As well as strengthening your mathematical understanding, you will develop a systematic, problem-solving mindset that prepares you for professional practice and enhances your ability to model, interpret and analyse complex chemical engineering systems.

Introductory Geology

This module will provide you with a basic understanding of geology. Over the course of the module, you will come to understand and interpret geological information, especially in the context of resource extraction and ground engineering. Topics include:

introduction to the main rock types and minerals
rock forming processes
the composition of the Earth
geological structures
natural hazards including volcanism and earthquakes
geological map interpretation
the Earth's resources of groundwater, minerals, coal and oil
engineering geology

Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer

The module will introduce you to the basic concepts of heat and mass transfer, with particular emphasis on the chemical process industries. In addition, you will use the concept of dimensionless analysis and the use of dimensionless numbers for the correlation of data. In mass transfer, the main concepts introduced will be related to diffusion and an introduction to mass transfer coefficients. This module also presents the basics of thermodynamics with particular emphasis on applications to process plant. By the end of the module, you will be able to analyse most of the common energy-based operations found on process plant.

You’ll also be able to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of engineering principles surrounding thermodynamics and heat and mass transfer and apply them to analyse key engineering problems.

Chemical and Phase Equilibria

This module acts as an introduction to chemical thermodynamics and its application to chemical, vapour/liquid/liquid equilibria, and correlation and prediction of data. You’ll learn to apply quantitative science and engineering tools to the analysis of process-related problems, providing you with a fundamental basis for evaluating reference physical property data. Topics include:

phase equilibrium in pure components
prediction of thermochemical data for pure components and mixtures
principles of equilibrium thermodynamics
multiphase systems
reacting systems

Analytical Measurement

This module is designed to give you an introduction, in both theory and practice, to the principles of analytical measurement. There is a particular emphasis on quality control, quality assurance and accreditation and how these underpin the topic. You will also cover the use of statistics for the assessment of data quality in analytical measurement.

Separation and Particle Technology

This module establishes the principles of mass transfer separation processes with detailed study of binary distillation, gas absorption/stripping and drying. You’ll also cover:

settling of single and multiple particles
terminal falling velocity
centrifugation
flow of fluids through beds of particles
iltration
luidisation
pneumatic transport
gas-solid separation processes
particle storage in hopper
particle size engineering
hazards in handling and utilisation of particles

Throughout the module, you’ll gain an understanding of how particles behave in engineering processes and learn how to derive and apply equations and concepts to predict how engineering processes involving particles behave.

Advanced Chemical Engineering Mathematics

Extend your mathematical knowledge to tackle advanced chemical engineering problems. You’ll learn advanced mathematical topics central to engineering analysis, including multivariable calculus, complex numbers, higher-order and multivariable differential equations, vector calculus, and numerical methods such as the Runge-Kutta and Euler methods.

You’ll explore these topics through chemical engineering applications, such as the mathematical modelling of physical systems involving reactors, heat transfer, mass transfer and momentum transfer. A key feature of the module is the use of Python programming to solve problems, preparing you to model, interpret and solve complex engineering problems with both theoretical insight and computational precision.

Materials and Sustainable Processes

This module introduces the basic science and engineering principles governing the use of materials in engineering applications. You will explore a range of commonly used engineering materials and their properties such as chemical bonding and structure, mechanical properties, elasticity, viscoelasticity, creep, fatigue and fracture.

You’ll also be introduced to a range of knowledge and skills applicable to the management of waste. Waste is increasingly viewed as a valued resources that must be managed and utilised effectively to minimise environmental impact. This module will introduce you to conventional waste management practices, including:

the development of legislation and how directives from the European Union impact our daily lives
current waste treatment techniques and technologies (including biological methods, thermal methods, mechanical biological treatment and landfilling)
techniques and approaches for the recovery and recycling of waste products
successful waste/resource recovery schemes

Process Design and Control

This module introduces the economic and control aspects of designing industrial process plants. You'll learn cost estimation techniques, simple economic design principles, and how process designs translate into engineered plants. You’ll gain experience in dynamic process simulation and process control concepts and gain familiarity with the concept of control features, PID, reliability and safety assessments like HAZOP/CHAZOP.

Water Treatment

This module will introduce you to a range of knowledge and skills applicable to water and wastewater treatment. You'll gain an understanding in water availability, sources of pollution and the legislative framework for water quality from an EU perspective.

Municipal water and wastewater treatment processes will be covered, focusing on key unit processes including sedimentation, filtration and disinfection. You’ll spend three hours per week studying for this module. Teaching is also complemented by site visits.

Air Pollution

The objective of the course is to give the student an overview an overview of air pollution problems and range of techniques which are available for its control; sources and effects of air pollutants of major concern; and the development of air quality criteria. The behaviour of the atmosphere and the dispersion of air pollutants are studied.

Students are introduced to techniques of air pollution measurement and their use in the assessment of the effects that industrial activity may have. An overview of current EU and UK environmental legislation is provided, and the role of the assessment and control of air pollution in the planning application of existing and new industrial process is discussed. The duties of process managers, local authorities and the Environment Agency are discussed in light of the current and proposed legislation.

This module gives knowledge and understanding of air pollution problems, including a categorization of the types of natural and anthropogenic air pollution sources, sinks, and the effects that air pollutants may produce within natural and manmade environments. Physiological effects and HSE aspects of air pollution. Review of national and international standards of permitted emission release and exposure levels of pollution. Introduction to the processes of selection and design of pollutant monitoring and control technologies that may be applied to control atmospheric emissions from industrial processes.

Reactor Design and Process Control

In this module, you’ll learn how to apply the fundamental principles of chemical kinetics along with heat and mass transport to design chemical reactors for both homogeneous and heterogeneous reactions. You’ll also gain a basis for understanding the dynamic behaviour of a process system and the options available for its safe single loop control.

The module is divided into two sections. Section A is made up of eight topics, each of which covers a fundamental principle in reactor design:

mole balances
conversion and reactor sizing
rate laws and stoichiometry
collection and analysis of rate data
isothermal reactor design
multiple reactions
steady-state non-isothermal reactor design
catalysis and catalytic reactors

Section B provides an appreciation of the dynamic behaviour of processes, effects of disturbances and single loop controllers, the features and constraints on choice of conventional process control instruments and equipment, and a basis for process analysis and design using dynamic process models and dynamic simulation. The main topics are:

process dynamic characteristics: 1st order, 2nd order and dead time
feedback control methods
controller tuning
cascade and feedforward control
design philosophy and flow-sheeting
frequency response

Design Project

This is a group design project focused on system-level process plant design. You’ll apply interdisciplinary knowledge and collaborative problem-solving to develop the key skills required for professional engineering design and practice. You’ll enhance your competencies in:

system-level design
ustainability
team collaboration
digital capabilities
professional communication

The module encourages critical reflection, inclusivity and the application of ethical reasoning in engineering contexts.

Process Engineering Laboratories

This module gives you a laboratory-based problem. You’ll have to carry out a process assessment, involving planning and carrying out design experiments to collect data required to solve the problem. Working in groups, you’ll analyse the data and adapt your experimental plan between the laboratory sessions. You’ll also write individual reports covering process assessment, experimental procedure and the description and discussion of the experimental results.

Through this, you’ll gain experience in planning and carrying out experiments as independently as possible, giving you the confidence to make decisions in a technical/scientific environment and adopt a rational, efficient approach to problem solving. You'll also become more familiar with the operation of commonly encountered chemical engineering equipment and improve your skills in collecting, analysing and interpreting experimental data.

Process Simulation

This module is an introduction to steady-state process simulation by computer. You will use a commercial package in a design environment to create and interact with a simulation of a real-life process and experiment with different scenarios to better understand how an actual industrial facility operates.

Multicomponent Separations

In this module, you’ll look in detail at the process of mass transfer in multi-component separation equipment and multicomponent separation processes. Topics include:

principles of design for distillation and absorption columns (including computer applications)
adsorption
membranes processes

Advanced Transport Phenomena

This module aims to provide you with an in-depth knowledge of heat, mass and momentum transport that is necessary in assessing, analysing and developing chemical, biochemical and environmental processes. Topics include:

fluid kinematics
Lagrangian and Eulerian frameworks
pressure and stress forces
conservation laws
fiffusive and convective transport
flow modelling, boundary and initial conditions
boundary layers and turbulence

1 modules

MEng Project

In this module, you’ll undertake a combined design and research project in a team of two to four students. In addition, you’ll gain detailed knowledge in the specific topic of study.

The aim is for you to gain skills in planning, executing and reporting on an individual research study thereby developing their powers of analysis, independence and critical judgement. You’ll spend one hour in tutorials and make use of group-study sessions each week studying for this module.

Advanced Rheology and Materials

This module will introduce you to the flow properties of complex fluids. You will cover rheological models, outline characterisation techniques and explore selected applications.

Advanced Reaction Engineering

This module aims to help you master advanced concepts in chemical reaction engineering. You’ll study advanced topics in reactor design, including mixing, reacting solids and the interactions of kinetics with mass and heat transfer and their effects on design.

Multiphase Systems

This module will extend your knowledge of more complex issues in fluid flow and heat transfer where the fluids are a combination of gas and liquid. The module will identify the industrial occurrence of the simultaneous flow of more than one phase and highlight the implications for design. It will establish the principles of flow and heat transfer in gas/liquid systems and the principles of design methods.

Advanced Computational Methods

This module is designed to give you experience of developing numerical models and to code them for solving practical chemical engineering problems, with potential application to research projects. Topics include:

an introduction to Matlab programming
writing code for modelling engineering systems
script files, arrays, loops, if statements, functions, plotting
application to Finite Difference and Monte Carlo modelling methods

You’ll be taught to develop numerical models for solving real chemical and environmental engineering problems such as flow and transport.

Environmental Risk Assessment

This module covers the following:

Risk assessment principles (source, pathway, receptor) including conceptual frameworks, Greenleaves III, risk based regulation and environmental protection
Risk characterisation, hazard identification, consequences, significance, handling uncertainty
Tools and techniques: Qualitative risk assessment. Quantitative risk assessment, ie hands-on risk assessment modelling
Risk management
Fate and transport of contaminants, speciation of contaminants, environmental partitioning (fugacity)
Health impact assessment: Public health, occupational health studies, toxicology, perception, exposure, causality, odds ratios, epidemiological studies, scientific evidence for landfill versus energy from waste (comparative assessment), odour

Renewable Energy from Wastes

In this module, you’ll look at the potential of various waste streams in industry, domestic sources and agriculture, as well as the different combustion technologies available. The module will include a strong international focus, particularly on small to medium scale renewable energy schemes in developing countries. The module also has dedicated socio-cultural, socio-economic, policy and guidance and techno-economic seminars to introduce students to the interdisciplinary nature of the subject.

Food Processing

In this module, you’ll be familiarised with our complex food systems and their formulation and performance. You’ll gain an understanding of a range of food process engineering technologies, enabling you to design process methodologies and comprehend current problems and their potential solutions. This includes:

an introduction to food materials (including physicochemical, structural, nutritional and functional characteristics) and their complex nature
food safety within a food processing environment, from factory design to finished product packaging at scale
comprehensive understanding of current unit operations used in food manufacturing
common current processes, including thermal and non-thermal, freezing, dehydration, separation, fermentation and packaging considerations
the link between processing conditions
AI and material properties
environmental and sustainability issues

Contaminated Land

This module develops a risk based framework for the assessment of contaminated land based on the characterization and modelling of contaminant sources, pathways and receptors and the remediation of such linkages.

Case studies are used to illustrate the application of this approach, the typical uncertainties and the management of risk. A range of physical, biological, chemical and thermal in-situ and ex-situ remediation technologies are covered. The application of these technologies is demonstrated by case studies including design studies based on the emerging concept of sustainable remediation.

If you qualify for a contextual offer, your EPQ will be taken into consideration, and the appropriate adjustment will be made to your offer. This is the UK undergraduate tuition fee for the academic year 25/26. It may increase for the academic year 26/27 and we will update our information once we have received confirmation of the fee from the UK Government.

Additional costs

All students will need at least one device to approve security access requests via Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). We also recommend students have a suitable laptop to work both on and off-campus. For more information, please check the equipment advice.

As a student on this course, you should factor some additional costs into your budget, alongside your tuition fees and living expenses:

Books - You should be able to access most of the books you’ll need through our libraries. If you wish to purchase your own copies, please budget around £40 to 90 per book.
Printing – Black and white printing costs 4p per side.
Trips – The department covers the travel cost of compulsory field trips.
PPE – The department shall provide; boots, lab coat and hardhat. If you lose these, you are responsible for the cost of replacing them. A standard PPE set (coat, boots, specs and hardhat) costs in the region of £45.
Year in industry - If you do a work placement, any costs associated with travel or accommodation will need to be factored in.
Year abroad - If you study abroad, you will need to consider the travel and living costs for the country you choose. This could include visa costs and medical insurance.
Laptops – Although there are PCs available for your use in our computer labs, you may wish to purchase your own laptop. Read more about our recommended specifications.
Calculator - While the calculator you used for your former study is usually sufficient some students will choose to purchase a new calculator which will cost around £10.

English language requirements

As well as IELTS (listed above), we also accept other English language qualifications. This includes TOEFL iBT, Pearson PTE, GCSE, IB and O level English. Check our English language policies and equivalencies for further details.

For presessional English or one-year foundation courses, you must take IELTS for UKVI to meet visa regulations.

If you need support to meet the required level, you may be able to attend a Presessional English for Academic Purposes (PEAP) course. Our Centre for English Language Education is accredited by the British Council for the teaching of English in the UK.

If you successfully complete your presessional course to the required level, you can then progress to your degree course. This means that you won't need to retake IELTS or equivalent.

Visa restrictions

International students must have valid UK immigration permissions for any courses or study period where teaching takes place in the UK. Student route visas can be issued for eligible students studying full-time courses. The University of Nottingham does not sponsor a student visa for students studying part-time courses. The Standard Visitor visa route is not appropriate in all cases. Please contact the university’s Visa and Immigration team if you need advice about your visa options.

Additional costs

As a student on this course, you should factor some additional costs into your budget, alongside your tuition fees and living expenses:

Books - You should be able to access most of the books you’ll need through our libraries. If you wish to purchase your own copies, please budget around £40 to 90 per book.
Printing – Black and white printing costs 4p per side.
Trips – The department covers the travel cost of compulsory field trips.
PPE – The department shall provide; boots, lab coat and hardhat. If you lose these, you are responsible for the cost of replacing them. A standard PPE set (coat, boots, specs and hardhat) costs in the region of £45.
Year in industry - If you do a work placement, any costs associated with travel or accommodation will need to be factored in.
Year abroad - If you study abroad, you will need to consider the travel and living costs for the country you choose. This could include visa costs and medical insurance.
Laptops – Although there are PCs available for your use in our computer labs, you may wish to purchase your own laptop. Read more about our recommended specifications.
Calculator - While the calculator you used for your former study is usually sufficient some students will choose to purchase a new calculator which will cost around £10.
