The purpose of this module is to introduce students to issues which will give them a better understanding of the study of a foreign language. It begins by providing students with a general introduction to the distinctive features of human communication in comparison to other forms of communication, for example animal communication. It then deals with the genetic relation between languages focusing on the similarities and dissimilarities between language families. The module will then introduce students to the basic notions of several subfields of Linguistics. Students will also be provided with the tools to transfer the linguistic notions covered during the course to their own language learning experience.
