The Exams Office recruits and manages invigilators to be a part of the Student Services - Service Development team supporting examination provision.

We employ University of Nottingham Postgraduate research students (PhD, MPhil and Professional Doctorate only) and individuals from the wider community to act as invigilators for main and alternative arrangement examinations, in both paper based and computer based exam formats. Examinations take place on University Park Campus, King's Meadow Campus, Sutton Bonington Campus (near Loughborough), as well as at Derby Medical School.

Examination dates for the 2019/2020 academic session

Autumn semester Examinations: Monday 13 January 2020 to Saturday 25 January 2020 – including Saturday 18 January 2020

Spring semester Examinations: Monday 18 May 2020 to Saturday 12 June 2020 – including Saturday 23 May, 30 May 2020, 06 June 2020

About invigilation

Main invigilation duties

  • Collecting examination papers from the Exams Office
  • Preparing examination rooms
  • Time keeping
  • Actively patrolling during examinations
  • Dealing with problems/queries during the examination by following guidelines set out by the University
  • Providing assistance to students where appropriate
  • Collection of examination scripts at the end of the examination
  • Returning examination scripts to the Exams Office

 Essential criteria

  • Applicants must be a postgraduate research student registered at the University of Nottingham, or be from outside the University.
  • Excellent command of English
  • Confident computer user (web based applications and Microsoft Word)
  • High degree of personal initiative and responsibility
  • Reliable and dependable
  • Proven ability to follow procedures
  • Demonstrates a sensitive approach to individual students

* - Roles not applicable for Unitemps Invigilators

Invigilators are employed as casual workers and as such, there is no minimum number of hours guaranteed. Non-students are employed as casual workers via HR department of the University and students are employed via Unitemps.

Due to Unitemps pay scales, student invigilators can only work in the roles of Lead Invigilator or Assistant Invigilator. Various hours are available from approximately 8.00am to 8.00pm Monday to Saturday during examination periods. Further guidance for casual workers is available here.
