Directed by Dr Chun-Yi Lee, the Taiwan Research Hub supports research into various elements of Taiwan.
We investigate the dynamics of Taiwan’s elections. For instance, we held a webinar to discuss about the results of mid-term election in 2022.
We are also preparing a major event for Taiwan’s upcoming presidential election in 2024.
Apart from the election, we also paid attention to the challenges that are faced by all democracies, the disinformation.
We focus on the security issues related to Taiwan and Indo-Pacific region. An example is a webinar we held to discuss the UK-Japan defence agreements and its impact on cross-Strait relations in 2023.
Facing the war in Ukraine, we held a webinar which connects scholars in Ukraine and Taiwan, to discuss the invasion from Russia to Ukraine, as well as the threat from China to Taiwan in 2022.
Taiwan’s external relations has been our constant research interests. For instance, we held a talk to discuss Taiwan’s relations with Vatican. This talk was held sometime after Vatican agreed to legalise illegitimate Chinese bishops in October 2018.
When the Biden administration entered the US government in November 2021, we had a webinar to invite expert in the field sharing their observations.
In 2018, we held a roundtable to discuss Taiwan’s New Southbound policy, in facing China’s Belt and Road Initiative, especially in Southeast Asian countries.
Our research hub explores different facets of Taiwanese society. Indigenous community is one important part. We highlight the equal marriage right of LGBTQ community in 2018.
In November 2021 when COP 21 was held in Glasgow, we also held a hybrid event to showcase the ‘green’ efforts that Taiwan made.
Lastly, during the period of Covid, we held an annual conference to compare Taiwan’s and British governments’ approach to combat Covid.
In 2021, we had an annual conference to discuss the implications of UK’s China’s and Taiwan’s applications to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). We also focused on the risk analysis in the global supply chain and its impact on Taiwan.
In 2021, we held a book launch for Professor Shelley Rigger on her new book, to discuss how Taiwan propelled China’s economic rise.
We explored Taiwan’s history in the nostalgia Taiwanese classic movies (Taiyupian) in 2017 and 2021.
In an interesting talk, we also reviewed the history of the Dutch United East India Company (VOC) in Taiwan in 2017.
We have collaboration with University of Washington in 2023, to hold an annual conference together. We are also preparing a topic section on International Journal of Taiwan Studies (IJTS) from this conference.
In Taiwan, we work with National Chengchi university and Taipei Medical University.
